Live Earth Concerts: Rock for Climate July 7

Using Music to Move the Message:   Billed as a "24-hour, 7-continent concert series taking place on 7/7/07 that will bring together more than 100 music artists and 2 billion people to trigger a global movement to solve the climate crisis," Live Earth is ambitious and praiseworthy.

It's also a starting point for a campaign "led by the Alliance for Climate Protection, The Climate Group and other international organizations to drive individuals, corporations and governments to take action to solve global warming." Ticket sales apparently benefit the climate groups.

Artists such as Madonna, The Police, John Mayer, Genesis, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Crowded House, Snoop Dogg, UB40 and many more are participating.

The concerts will take place in the United States, United Kingdom, Brazil, South Africa, Japan, China, Australia and Germany. In Antarctica, a group of scientists will play a concert for 17 people at a British research station on Adelaide Island.

If you can't make it to one of the shows, you can watch some on TV or online or catch it on radio. MSN will stream all of the concerts live online and NBC will show some in prime time Saturday night. Both XM And Sirius radio will carry the concerts.

The Live Earth site has a carbon-footprint calculator to help you measure your impact on the climate. I went through it quickly and had a score of 299 for my household -- a tad below the U.S. average of 325 (lower is better).

There's also a Live Earth Global Warming Survival Handbook, with 77 tips to reduce your climate impact. It's a small-format book with each tip on a two-page spread, so it's easy to read a few tips at a time.

I think the concerts, book and campaign are all great things, because they will probably motivate a bunch more people to take action on climate change. Are you going to one of the concerts? What do you think of these events? Post your comments here.

July 6 Update: Al Gore and Live Earth have secured a Washington, D.C., venue for an additional concert. The Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian has added Gore and several performers to its "Mother Earth" concert featuring American Indian musicians. The show will take place in the museum's plaza, which can hold about 200 people, but video screens will be set up by the Capitol reflecting pool nearby so larger crowds can watch.

Also, the Live Earth Rio concert in Brazil is now scheduled to happen, after a judge lifted a ban on the event.

Stage staffs work on a rehearsal a day before the Live Earth concert at a hall in Makuhari Messe, Chiba, Japan.

LET ME PLEASE INTRODUCE MYSELF... I'M A MAN OF BLAH BLAH BLAH... THE FACT IS,  YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH...  IN ORDER TO CLEAN UP THE ENVIRONMENT, THERE IS GOING TO HAVE TO BE DRASTIC CUTS IN ALL KINDS OF TRAFFIC, COMMERCE, ETCETERA TO THE TUNE OF ECONOMIES TAKING A HIT,  MANY PEOPLE LOSING THEIR JOBS AND HAVING TO SURRENDER MUCH OF WHATEVER WE'VE GROWN ACCUSTOMED TO... HUMAN GREED WILL NOT ALLOW MOTHER NATURE TO WIN THAT WAR ANYTIME SOON.  WE ARE LIVING IN AN AGE OF HYPOCRICY... THERE IS NO WAY AROUND IT... RATIONALIZE ALL YOU WANT BUT BEYOND ALL THIS, YOU CANNOT CONTROL THE HEAT OF THE SUN... WE ARE CAUGHT BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE... THERE IS NO SOLUTION AND WE HAVE ONLY SOCIETY TO THANK FOR MAKING IT WORSE...  DON'T WORRY, BE HAPPY... RIGHT ?  DIG A NICE HOLE IN THE GROUND... IT'S COOL DOWN THERE, MAYBE...

Gee, sounds like another "genius" Republicunt sounding off. Water vapor is not the leading cause of the green-house effect. Humans and every thing we use emit 230 BILLION tons of CO2 a year compared with mother nature and volcanoes, which stand at 125-135 MILLION tons. Al Gore is only trying to make the public aware to what is threatening our planet and existence, because so many people like you get their "facts" from Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, and other Republicunt morons. So much for your two-cents, which is about all it's worth.

Al Gore's job is to distract you from the REAL ills facing this country, like the Chinese, Japanese and Asian Indians buying up bonds the US govt. sells to fund our national debt.  When they call in the markers, you, your kids and grandkids will owe 10, 20, 50, maybe $100,000 each!  So you keep buying those Toyotas in which case most of the profit goes to Japan which uses it to buy the bonds. So as you look out in the driveway at your shiny "yota, go tell your kids you love 'em! Combine that with murderers that go free, increasing taxes, illegal immigration, etc., and you realize the country is shot! If you don't realize it, it's because Al Gore and his environmental wackos have you too worried about global warming!  That's his job, to distract you!  Did you know the biggest contributor to the greenhouse effect is water vapor!?  They're worried about CO2.  Each of us exhales 2.2 lbs of CO2 per day!  The US and world population has doubled in the last 40 years!  So YOU are responsible, not the cars!  Weed whackers, cars and industrial plants combined, emit just 1/20 of what nature does in the form of human exhalation, volcanoes, and rotting vegetation!  Wake up people! You've been scammed!
