To See the Stars, Take a Vacation From Light Pollution
Get Out of the Glare: Last week I was vacationing in Blackwater Falls State Park in West Virginia and one of the big treats was seeing the Milky Way and the thousands of stars at night. I took some photos, including the one below:

I live near Washington, D.C., and I can't see nine-tenths of these stars -- nor the Little Dipper. Big Dipper, yes. If you live in or near a big city, you probably have a similar problem. It's a shame many of us have to travel in order to see the glories of the night sky.
If you are concerned about light pollution -- the urban and suburban glare that washes out the stars -- check out the International Dark Sky Association. They have images of the Earth and the United States at night. The eastern U.S. is particularly bright at night.
How much can you see -- or can't you see -- from where you live?
