Welcome...Things Are Heating Up Already

Welcome to my new "green" blog! I'll be sharing green living tips, nature news and photos, plus maybe a book or movie review now and then for good measure. When interesting environmental stories surface in the news cycle, I'll post 'em along with my comments -- and hope to get input from you all as well.

A Week of Global Warming: For me, the focus of the last week has been global warming and climate change. First, I published a story about a new global warming public awareness ad campaign, launched by the Ad Council and the advocacy group Environmental Defense. Pretty powerful stuff. If you're not concerned about global warming, check out their 'Train' ad. It'll give you a good reason.

I also reviewed a new documentary film about climate change called 'The Great Warming.' The movie is an excellent overview of the issue, with tons of information. One good point they made was, hey, you don't need 99 percent certainty to buy car or health insurance -- so we need to act now, invest in climate "insurance," to slow down global warming and reduce the risks of coastal flooding and other predicted effects.

Then Time magazine came out with a cover story, "Earth Is at the Tipping Point," saying the crisis is upon us and that the debate on whether climate change is happening has ended. It is happening. Two new polls show that Americans think global warming is probably happening -- 85 percent in a TIME / ABC News / Stanford University poll and 71 percent in a poll commissioned by Environmental Defense.

When I talked to Bill Chameides, chief scientist at Environmental Defense, he said that "scientists believe the Earth is near a tipping point and once past it, it will be impossible to reverse" the process of global warming. He said "there is a solution in stop the pollution." But we need to start now. Pollution like carbon dioxide emissions from cars lingers a long, long time. "The pollution from the first Model T is still in the atmosphere," Chameides said.

In our Focus on Global Warming site we have tips to save energy and slow global warming, plus a way for you to calculate your impact.

This is a response to hlmango13.
Do you not care about our future generations many years down the road? Do you not care about your health or the fact that we are the main contributors to the dieing of this earth? Yes everything will die eventually, but what is so wrong with trying to preserve the one thing we have depended on for all of our existence. This earth has given us so much and all you want to do is sit back and watch it waste away to nothing. Well think about that the next time you want a breath of clean fresh air, this will probably be as you hop into your SUV, but just remember the decisions you are making today are destroying this planet for all the years to come.

I believe it's quite likely that a metorite will turn the earth to dust long before the temp gets too hot for us to exist.  Of cource the core of the earth is cooling and someday it will simply implode, so enjoy yourself, it may be later than you think.  The earth started dying the day it was born.  People begin to die the day they are born.  Every living thing begins to die the day it is born.  Sorry to bust your bouble people, thats just the way it is.
