The Buggs Island Fish and Wildlife Club was honored to have been the host to the annual Buggs Island Archers "The Big Apple" archery tournament June 29, 30 and July 1, 2007.

This was the 28th year for this event. We had 71 registered shooters, with approximately 140 people from all over the state attending, not counting the local folks who come to eat and enjoy the 3-day event, said Archery President, Gary Sehen & Archery Secretary, Terry Coghill,

This event is one of the most popular Archery Tournaments in our division.

We have one of the prettiest 28 target archery ranges on the club grounds laid out within the tall oaks & pines and our shooting lanes are covered with green moss, grass, lined with natural rocks, ferns and other natural vegetation.

Jerry and Debbie Jordan work thru out the year to maintain the archery lanes and make sure it stays as natural as possible.

Jerry is the Buggs Island Fish and Wildlife Club President and participates in other events to which the club is hosts. We encourage families and especially our youth to become involved in the art of Shooting Archery and other nature related activities. Our Club is an associate member of The V.B.A. ( The Virginia Bow Hunter’s Association )

When you come to a Buggs Island Archery event you can count on good food, games, door prizes, surprises and lots of fun, said Larry Hill from The New River Bowhunters Association in Galax, Va.

More than 8 lbs. of spaghetti was cooked for Friday nights supper and for Saturday Nights annual barbeque supper we smoked 35 whole hams with all the trimmings. Seven was used for supper with the remaining being sold to archers and local folks.

Many THANKS to the people who donated door prizes and their time to help make this year’s tournament a major success, especially Bobcats Bait and Tackle,

Food Preparation and Kitchen help Kim Jordan, Rebecca Golda, Nancy Gump, Joanna Hill, Kim Fulps, Jim Woofter, Henry Hagood and Carl Haga,

 (Taken from the VBA Website)

Guide to Shoots

Virginia Bowhunters Association (VBA)
Field, Hunter, Animal, & 3D Rounds
This page is a guide, to explain to you, the archery courses; the various targets, styles and equipment used; the rounds; and, how the shoots are conducted.
We invite you to join us and extend our Welcome to you, in hopes that we will receive you as a new member.
Archery is a contest which is conducted the same way by all the member clubs wherever you go.  The NFAA establishes the rules and VBA coordinates the schedule "shoots" or tournaments held by member clubs.  Every year, VBA publishes a tournament schedule listing all the club schedule shoots.
A booklet is also available, showing the names and location of each club in the state.
An archery course consists of twenty-eight (28) targets.  Four (4) arrows are shot at each target.  The maximum score for each arrow is five (5) points.  Five points x four arrows = twenty points per target.  Twenty points per target x twenty-eight targets = 560 points.  The twenty-eight targets are laid out so that they form a safe, one-way path from one target to the next.  The  twenty-eight targets vary in distance from 10 and 80 yards for the Field and 10 to 70 yards for the Hunter round.
There are four different size targets.  The smallest targets are shot at the shortest distance and the largest are on the longest shots.  Eachtarget has either the two or three scoring rings.  The three ring is called the “Championship” target with the central dot having a value of five points, the middle ring with a value of four, and the outer ring with a value of three.  The two ring target, calledthe “Standard” target, with a central ring dot has a value of five points and the outer ring has a value of three points.  In addition to the two different targets, there are two different types of faces.  The Field face has a black dot on a white background and the Hunter face has a white dot on a black background.
Each target has assigned shooting positions which are marked by stakes in the ground.  White stakes mark the shooting position for Field distances and red stakes mark the Hunter distances.  Each person is required to stand between or ‘toe’ the stakes when they shoot.
In some cases all four arrows are shot from a single stake.  However, there are walk-up targets and fans (in line with each other.)   Walk-ups have four shooting positions at different distances.  The first arrow that is shot is at the longest distance.  Fan targets have four shooting positions, all equal distances to the target.  One arrow is shot from each stake.  "Bunnies" are basically 10 yard walk-up targets.  The bunny is shot from bottom to top.
Generally four people shoot together.  Two shoot at the same time.  At targets #1 through #14, archers #1 and #2 will shoot first.  At targets #15 through #28, archers #3 and #4 go first.  When you get to a target which has four faces, archers #1 and #2 will shoot the bottom left and right respectively for the first fourteen targets.  At target #15, archers #1 and #2 will switch.  This way, each archer gets to shoot at every target position.
When you go to a shoot, you present your VBA and/or NFAA card to the Club's registrar.  A registration fee is $5.00 to $10.00 depending on the scheduled shoot.  After the shoot, your score is officially posted and your card is returned to you.  Your average will be based on the highest three (3) of your last seven (7) scores.  When you shoot, you compete against archers who shoot in the same style and equipment as you.  In other words, someone who shoots "fingers" andpin sights, will not compete with someone who shoots with a release, scope or long stabilizer.  Now, what about the different types of shooting styles and equipment?  There are Barebow, Traditional, Competitive Bowhunter, Bowhunter Freestyle, Bowhunter Freestyle Limited, Freestyle, and Freestyle Limited as describe as follows:

Styles Equipment
Barebow (BB)

No sights or mechanical devices allowed
stabilizers permitted,
fingers, tabs or gloves only
Traditional (Trad)

Recurve or Longbow
No Sights
fingers, tabs or gloves only
Competitive Bowhunter (BH)

No Sights, kisser button, or clicker allowed
Stabilizer permitted
Fingers, tabs or gloves only
Bowhunter Freestyle (BHFS)

Sight with maximum five fixed pins
Stabilizer must be less than 12"
Mechanical release aid permitted (no clickers)
Bowhunter Freestyle Limited (BHFSL)

Sight with maximum five fixed pins
Stabilizer must be less than 12"
Fingers, tabs or gloves only
Freestyle (FS)

Any type of sight and stabilzer
Mechanical release aid permitted (no clickers)
Freestyle Limited (FSL)

Any type of sight and stabilzer
Fingers, tabs or gloves only

Divisions are recognized as Adults; Juniors (young adults 15 to 17), Youth (12 to 14) or Cub (under 12); Seniors (55 & over); or Professionals.

As mentioned above, archers are classified according to their average.  For each style there are four (4) classifications:  AA, A,  B  and  C.  For example:  the classes of A-F-BHFSL (Adult, Female, Bowhunter Freestyle Limited) are as follows:

AA= 425 to 560
A = 350 to 424
B = 225 to 349
C = 0 to 224
If your average is 420, then you would register as a class "A” - BHFSL.  You would compete with other class "A" shooters.  If you are the only class A-BHFSL to enter a shoot, you would automatically win in your class, no matter how well you shot that day.  But, you should always try to bring your score up in order to move to the next class.

The Animal Round

Another type of archery target round that you will encounter is the Animal round.  These targets vary in sizes, depending upon the distance of the shot.  The Animals are shot from the yellow stakes and range from 10 to 60 yards.

The way this round is shot and scored is entirely different from the Field and Hunter rounds.  The Animal targets have a realistic kill zone made up of the heart, lungs and liver.  The kill (or vital) zone is not the only area of value on the Animals.  The balance of the Animal target (or wound) zone is enclosed by a hide and hair line (or non-vital) also scores, but has fewer points.  The individual arrows must be numbered and shot consecutively (i.e. 1, 2, & 3).  A maximum of three arrows may be shot.  The first arrow to hit the kill or wound zone is scored.

The scoring is as follows:

  Vital Non-Vital
First arrow
20
18
Second Arrow
16
14
Third Arrow
12
10

For example:  If your first arrow hits the non-vital area of the animal target, your score would be 18.  You need not shoot arrows #2 or #3.  If your first arrow missed the Animal target, you would then shoot your #2 arrow.  A vital hit on your second arrow scores a 16.  Maximum score for each target is 20.
By attending the shoots, you  will meet people who will share their knowledge with you and enable you to learn more about archery, equipment, bow tuning, form, etc.

3D Round

The style and equipment setups are basically the sameas used in regular tournament archery.  When shooting 3D, you are shooting at twenty to twenty-eight McKensey or Delta 3D animal targets rather than paper targets.  You are shooting at unknown distances, touching the stakes with your toes, and shooting one arrow per animal.  The arrow must touch the line of the next higher zone in order for it to count at the higher point score.  No target is over 50 yards and cubs shoot no further than 25 yards.  Shooting groups consist of three to four people, one designated as the target captain and two others as scorers.  Score cards must be signed and turned in when finished shooting.

Keep your feathers flying as,
“VBA is Always on Target!!”
