Hearing How Will I Know? -- Whitney Houston

How Will I Know?

For today's post, I was gonna talk about the fact that Pluto is no longer a planet, but Journals Editor Joe beat me to it, quickly followed by the blogosphere at large. You got to get up early to beat Joe and the blogosphere, which he commands like an evil army of sword-swinging skeletons.

Then I came across a piece in Harper's (thanks again, BoingBoing) that is either an elegant, hilarious hoax or a reminder that even in the cruelest corners of Earth, life is pretty freaking silly. It's by a woman who claims to have been Osama bin Laden's mistress -- and contains the sort of language, adult situations and illegal behavior that you'd think an article by an angry ex might contain. Consider yourself warned.

Among other unsavory details, the article describes bin Laden's supposed love for singer Whitney Houston, which strikes me as completely ridiculous. I've always been more of a Gloria Estefan man, myself.

Here's an excerpt of the article:

Osama kept coming back to Whitney Houston. He asked if I knew her personally when I lived in America. I told him I didn't. He said that he had a paramount desire for Whitney Houston, and although he claimed music was evil, he spoke of someday spending vast amounts of money to go to America and try to arrange a meeting with the superstar.

A post at WFMU's superlative Beware of the Blog cross-references moments in Houston's career (and super-public personal life) with key moments in bin Laden's career. Whether this post is a taller heap of steaming speculation than the original is up to you, blog readers.

I don't make this stuff up. All I do is bring it to the people.

What do you think? Does the Harper's piece seem like it's for real to you, or just a slyly crafted bit of ridiculous fiction? If this is real, do you think it is Houston's patriotic duty to beckon Osama out of hiding with her sweet siren's song?
