Hearing Bang on the Drum -- Todd Rundgren
What Are You Doing For Labor Day?
In the spirit of Scalzi and in honor of Labor Day, I've got an overnight project for you guys:
What have you got planned for this Labor Day weekend? What are some of your fondest Labor Day memories? Bang out an entry and leave a link in my comments ... I'd love to see what you guys are up to.
As for me, I think that my fondest Labor Day memory actually happened last year.
Two of my best friends got married on the Eastern Shore, and their wedding was spectacular. (The photo above is me with an old friend from college.)
The groom and I bonded in kindergarten -- I could read and write, and he knew all the cuss words already. He would tell them to me, and I'd write them in the dirt with a stick to the glee of our classmates. Things have changed since then, but not much. The bride was the singer/keyboardist in the band the three of us had together.
My parents don't go out that much anymore, but they made it to the wedding. So did a bunch of great friends from childhood, high school, and our years as underemployed artsy twentysomethings in Richmond, VA's ramshackle ghettos. We drank, ate, laughed, and drank.
Then we went back to the hotel bar, which served as the Eastern Shore's ONLY gay/lesbian/transgender/drag bar. It was karaoke night and we all sang with a bunch of rural drag queens and then ordered more pizza that I've ever seen in my life:
Labor Day weekend 2005 is
also really special to me because I started at AOL that Tuesday. I'll
be celebrating this weekend by taking the Chinatown bus to New York
(sketchy!) and eating dinner at Peter Luger's with some old friends.
Now it's your turn: write your own Labor Day plans (or memories) in your journal, post it, and either email me a link or leave one in my comments.

Jeff,
Reading this entry has taken me back some 30 years. I lived in Maryland for 11 years. I lived in a media getto outside notrhwest Baltimore. Many of my neighbors were from the Eastern Shore. I still keep in touch with many of them. My friend, Susan is still teaching communications at U of M, in College Park.
We played mountain volleyball this last labor day week end. I did a post on the function.
Smiles to you Jeff.
