Hearing The Like - June Gloom

Yeah Yeah Yeahs at Bowery Ballroom on 2-24-06!

I wanted so badly to take some great pics for the show, and we got there early to get a good spot only a few feet from the mic as well but it was not to be. Camera issues aside, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs threw a great show and tested out most of their new material from their upcoming album “Show Your Bones”, which is due out on March 28. After seeing their video for their single called Gold Lion, I had mixed feelings. The reason I liked Fever to Tell so much is due to their chaotic, in-your-face, relentless pacing track after track that melded together seamlessly. Show Your Bones takes a decidedly different approach and sprinkles some folky(!) riffs  into the band’s trademark sound by way of an acoustic guitar. The new material sounded great live, and I enjoyed watching Karen O‘s stage persona come to life, as she jumped around maniacally onstage, chewed on feathers, and put the mic in her mouth.  Her vocals were spot-on as well.  Since I hadn’t seen them live before, I wished that they played more tracks from Fever (maybe just more tracks overall), but they did whip out Black Tongue, and closed with Maps and Modern Romance in the encore set.

I really like the direction their new album has taken them. If you don’t like what you hear with your first impression, give it some time and chances are it will grow on you too.
