Welcome to my 'American Idol' Blog 'n Watch for May 10th!
As always, these are notes jotted (er, typed) during the show, not spellchecked and contain various personal opinions. Hey, I type it. I have that right!
;-)
Heh, when the judges were introduced, both Simon and Randy pointed out Paula. The crowd was enthusiastic for the Accused Woman, Paula Abdul.
Two songs each again for contestants... Philly sound and Nashville.
'Sin Wagon' -- Dixie Chicks for Carrie. Gosh, she sure sounds country. Of course, this genre is her forte. I think she's doing it justice, although I'm not familiar with the song. Audience standing ovation. Randy: "Perfect song for you to sing. You are ready for the record charts." Paula: "Gush, joy, sweetness and light." Simon: "Very, very good indeed and we saw personality."
Lots of commercials. Lots. Bo is supposed to be up next.
Finally... Bo sings a Travis Tritt song... sounds good so far. He may be a rocker, but he's also got that Southern accent. He can do country. I don't know the song... but he seems to be doing it well... I think. Randy: "Yo, Dawg. Another great performance. I didn't love the song, but... brilliant." Paula: "Song was easy feeling, pick challenges, gush, joy." Simon: "Boring, uninspired. Wasn't great."
More commercials. 'Nanny 911' has a season finale coming? Oh, my... what are those little brats gonna do without them? Yikes!
Vonzell, a Tricia Yearwood song. Of course, I won't know that one either! <g> She looks very pretty. The song sounds good. Safe song, so far. I think they'll say like they did with Bo. 'How Do I Live Without You' may be the title as it's the refrain. Randy: "Yo, started rough. Song felt slow." Paula: "Beautiful performer, gush, joy." Simon: "You looked and sounded very nervous." She's crying. Told them she had a rough day.
Anthony, Ukrainian Cowboy, next. 'I'm Already There' possibly? I don't know the song. A good vehicle for him. He seems to be trying to push it. Randy: "Yo, Man. Gotta give ya props. It was good." Paula: "Good, but stretchfor it, gush, joy." Simon: "You sang it well, but it feels like Miss Universe. It felt cynical. Gooey. Syrupy."
After the break, sounds of Philly...
Gamble and Huff songs... love that music!
Carrie -- 'If You Don't Know Me By Now' -- I love her rendition! She's putting a bit of a country edge on the song which identifies herself in it. Randy: "Yo, one of those things for me tonight which just didn't work." Paula: "Agree with Randy." Simon: "Appalling arrangement. Boring, lethargic, complete and utter mess." OH, I DISAGREE! She's not my favorite to win, but I thought she did that song great!
Commercial. Peggy is glad she's not getting a stomach ache by looking at that "serial killer" this week. ;-)
Bo... 'For the Love of Money' by the O'Jays! I ADORE THAT SONG! Let's see...! Hmmm... not my favorite song he's done now that he's doing it. He's doing it well, putting a lot of force behind it. Paula standing ovation. Randy: "Yo, yo man...I hope that's on your record." Paula: "Best performance so far, love, gush." Simon: "Terrible image, fantastic performance." Crowd going wild.
Vonzell sings 'Don't Leave Me This Way." Hmmm... good performance, IMO. One of her better and stronger ones. Randy: "Excellent job. You can definitely sing." Paula -- standing O - "Gush, joy." Simon: "You pulled all the stops on that song."
3 and a half minutes of commercials. Yikes.
Anthony is doing the same song as Carrie. He thanks his parents for giving him the American Dream. He's emoting a lot as he sings. He seems to be really trying to do well tonight. Randy: "Better version. Good, you worked it out." Paula: "Nailed it." Simon: "You need soul to sing that. Better arrangement."
Okay, it's America's call.

Regarding the American Idol finale:
It was soooooooooo obvious this season that they wanted something different, in an American Idol star.
From day one, there was a lot of hype and hoopla over the fact that "finally, we got some 'rockers' on this show" (which I think was uttered by Randy, early on).
Midway through the show, I was convinced that it would be either Bo or Constantine, as the winner in the end. After Constatine was eliminated, I was positive that it would be Bo.
However, I hadn't considered the "unknown" factor. That factor being Simon. I never used to pay attention to his ramblings, and often dimissed him as a bit of a dolt. But, looking back, I can now see how instrumental he has been in influencing the elimination of several REALLY good singers.
I have noticed how he seems to target the really good singers. Initially, I attributed his comments to just being a really poor judge of talent. Now, I realize that he was actually exerting his influence on the "Idol" voting audience.
Let's face it, Simon has been drooling over Carrie from the beginning. And, in the final weeks when Bo and Carrie were virtually tied, Simon threw his support to Carrie. And, that my friends, is what gave Carrie the edge that she needed, and ultimately the American Idol crown!
Perhaps, Simon has been inspired by the character Ellsworth Toomey from Ayn Rand's, "The Fountainhead."
