The Amazing Race 7' Leg/Episode 7/8 of the Race
THE JOURNEY
Botswana, Southern Africa to Lucknow, India to Jodhpur, India
OR...
"How Can CBS Call This Episode 8 When it Was a 'To be continued...'?!?!"
The teams rested up at the Pit Stop in the Khwai River Lodge located in Northern Botswana and the next clue instructed them to fly to Lucknow, India. To begin they had go to Francistown, Botswana to sign up for a charter flight where they will be given tickets to Mumbai (used to be Bombay), India. Teams will be responsible to purchase their own tickets from Mumbai to Lucknow. They were given $125 for this leg of the race.
While at the Francistown Airport, both Rob and Alex/Lynn played the Sneaky Card. Since it was an arranged flight and all they needed to buy themselves were the tickets from Mumbai to Lucknow, the woman behind the counter told them they'd have to wait an hour while she processed them. Ron/Kelly stayed indoors with Romber while the other teams went outside. Now comes that Sneaky Card -- Rob asked the woman to let him peek at connections to Lucknow and garnered himself, Amber and Ron/Kelly the quickest flight. Meanwhile, outside Lynn/Alex borrowed a cell phone and called a travel agent to get tickets for them, Uchenna/Joyce and Meredith/Gretchen. Alas, their flight was 5 minutes behind the other one.
At the Mumbai Airport Gretchen bought a small backpack and chucked that yellow plastic sack she had. Meredith continues to carry his garbage bag of belongings and it seems to have grown a lot. At Lucknow, the folks arriving on the second flight found out that the other two teams arrived first. Irked, they were.
Their clue told them they must take a taxi to the Bara Imamabara Palace where they would receive their next clue. The taxi cabs turned out to be prepay ordeals and I do mean ordeal! It was unruly, mobbed, hectic and confusing! Romber and Ron/Kelly had just left when the other teams arrived. Too bad so sad, Ron/Kelly had to stop for gas. Uchenna/Joyce found out the inside counter of the prepay taxi was not crowded and got underway next. Meanwhile, Lynn/Alex and Meredith/Gretchen were lost in chaos. They bargained, they got frustrated and they got many price quotes. I recall one was 330 rupees. I looked it up -- that's about $7.60 American dollars. It just sounds like a lot.
Donning native head coverings (A.K.A. scarves), the teams had to go through the Palace grounds to a section called Bouli to get their next clue. That one led them to taking a horse-drawn carriage called a tonga to the Kohinoor Steel Emporium and they were cautioned there is a Yield ahead.
Foolishly, Ron/Kelly didn't Yield Romber once they arrived. Tsk, tsk. Once they arrived at the Steel Emporium and made it through the Yield, they received the next clue -- a Roadblock. In this Roadblock, "Who has a lot of patience?," one team member had to search through stacked steel boxes of varying size searching for the next clue. There were 10 clues hidden (keep in mind, 5 teams racing now) somewhere within the 600 steel boxes. Rambunctious Rob sat out and let Patient Amber go in while Kelly went for Ron/Kelly. Both seemed to make pretty quick work of it. As the other teams arrived Uchenna, Gretchen and Alex thought they were Patient Ones. Alex found the clue in no time at all while Uchenna kept on looking and Gretchen whined. Uchenna found his clue and left Gretchen wringing her hands, fussing and NOT finding the clue. By the time she did, the crowds outside gave them a standing ovation. I think it had to be LONG after the other teams finished.
The clue received instructed them to take a cycle rickshaw 3 miles to Aishbagh where they would pick up the next clue at a gas station under a bridge.
And, it was a ... Detour - SOLID or LIQUID? In SOLID teams must go 1 mile to a place to smash up 170 pounds of coal which will be placed in two burlap sacks. The sacks of coal (Santa... Rob... get him!) would then be placed on a flatbed tricycle and driven 4 blocks away to the um... coal store. The task is quick for muscle types. No one chose that one. Instead, all teams chose LIQUID where they had to go 3 miles to a tea store, get a cart of hot tea and cups, push it 100 yards to a 3 story office building. They were each given a list of ten names and had to find five folks on the list, serve them tea and snag their business cards. Each tea cup had to be delivered separately and the cart has to be returned.
Once they got the clue from the Sharma Tea Corner vendor, they were directed to make their way 1 1/2 miles to "meet Phil at the mat" on the rooftop of some building which sounded like the Chagbah Multi-Story Flats.
Exhausted and sweating teams made their way there. Romber arrived first only to hear Phil say, "This leg isn't over." He handed them a clue.
MISCELLANEOUS THOUGHTS and BEST LINES...
WHAT I HATED: I really didn't hate all that much in this episode with the exception of my outburst above.
WHAT I LOVED: I loved how the local folks gave Gretchen and Meredith such a huge friendly ovation and ran along with them from the Steel Emporium.
WHAT I HATED A BIT: Ron/Kelly started calling each other "Babe" and "Baby." No! Cut that out! You don't even get along, you babies!
WHAT I ALSO LOVED: The excitement of the local citizens and how receptive and helpful they were for the most part. I
I LIKED: The sneaky guy in the office who building who lied to Gretchen about who he was and tried to take a tea. "Shame on you! You're not Raj!"
I ALSO LOVED: That the teams themselves were excited to be in India and the hustle and bustle of the streets.
I LOVED: Alex's happy dance when finding the clue at the Steel Emporium so quickly.
FAVORITE TEAM THIS LEG: Uchenna/Joyce. Of the teams left, they're who I'm liking the best. They don't fight and they just keep pushing without compromising their integrity.
Rob talking about Ron/Kelly not Yielding them: "They're not the brightest bulbs on the Christmas tree."
Alex/Lynn exchange while riding the tonga:
"I feel like Ben-Hur!"
"I don't know who that is."
Who played Ben-Hur in the movie of the same name?
