Tongue-in-cheek morning
WORST QUERY:
Looking for my family, who hung out in North Carolina. They had 5 kids, maybe 6. One maybe died young. They are said to have arrived in the US but I don't know where. They all dided cos they not hear. I want to know if they was bored. My aunt says they was board. I am new to this so I don't know where to put this. Any help appricited. My aunt says she knows everybody in are family and she says ours dont belong to anyone else. So you better not be reasershin our family.
(based on an actual query seen on the web)
SOMETIMES, I AM TEMPTED TO REPLY WITH THIS:
Looking for family -- What is the family name?
hung out in North Carolina -- Oh my I hope you don't mean literally "hung out" ! Where in NC? Awfully big State.
5 kids, maybe 6, One died young - --- so is it 5? 6? or 7? kids When were they born? At least give a century! From beginning of time till now is an awfully long time to search! Uh, a few names would help too.
arrived in the US---- yes, at some point, all our ancestors did
don't know where -- we need their names first
they dided cos they not hear -- (Probably did not hear over my laughter - sorry, I'll reply to this when I stop laughing.)
they were all board -- maybe they needed a hammer?
if they were bored, maybe a library card would help?
don't know where to put this -- The message Boards are not just "pick one" - what is the family's last name? (One person replied to my email and said "I don't know.")
Any help appricited. --- so is a spell-checker or dictionary
My aunt says she knows everybody in are family -- then ask her!
and she says ours dont belong to anyone else. -- hmmm, wonder what your cousins would say to that?
So you better not be reasershin our family. --- oh with everything you told me, I've already found every piece of information on your family. But don't worry! I'll give it to your cousins & their families.
A GOOD QUERY:
- contains first and LAST names, LAST name in CAPS
- city, county, state & where they moved (if they moved)
- dates -- any dates -- birth, marriage, death, or all of these
- a little of what you already know. If you looked at the 1880 census, say so; that way volunteers won't re-do what has been done.
- If you don't want help & believe no one should search "your" family (as though someone "owns" a family), then do not post.
- sign your name
