The Jets make their first trip ever to Paul Brown Stadium this week to take on the Cincinnati Bengals. This matchup features a pair of teams with high expectations entering the year that have failed to live up to the hype. If the Bears and the Saints took the field to decide who is the most disappointing NFL team of 2007, one could easily argue that this could be the bronze medal game. The Jets and the Bengals both will look to start salvaging some pride in lost seasons on Sunday.
The Bengals for years were a case study in general ineptitude. Now they are a case study in underachieving. Everybody knows about the off the field issues that have plagued this team. It only goes to show that a team built around low character individuals does not keep battling when things get difficult. No club has more talent at skill positions than Cincy. Any team with Carson Palmer, Chad Johnson, Rudi Johnson, and T.J. Houshmandzadeh should at least be in the running for a Playoff spot, but the Bengals sit at 1-4.
Their defense is pretty untalented and has been plagued by injuries, but there seems to be a defeatist attitude permeating the locker room in the Queen City. Marvin Lewis keeps challenging his team after losses, but they never seem to respond. There is no intensity, and they could not look sloppier. There is no discipline. Chad Johnson's attitude has become a major distraction. Things could not get much worse for Cincy.
With that said, the Jets are in trouble. High talent, low character teams seem to come through in games like these. The Bengals are a bully team. Whenever they see a challenge, they sit down. Against the Jets, they see a very flawed opponent that should be an easy win. Cincinnati's thin defense looks bad, but the Jets cannot move the ball. They could not against an awful Bills defense. They will again this week. Chad Pennington is playing with no confidence right now. It is almost as if he has no idea where the ball is going when he releases it. He has gotten lazy and cavalier with his throws. New York will likely utilize Thomas Jones as much as last week given his outstanding play and the coaching staff's diminishing faith in Chad. The Jets are still going to need to throw on third and long, and Pennington is not going to be able to consistently extend drives. Cincy's secondary has had a rough go of things this season, but Deltha O'Neal and Leon Hall are playmakers capable of jumping inaccurate Pennington passes. Both should be able to pick up an interception. The Jets are not going to go to Kellen Clemens until after the bye week. They will not want to put the pressure of outscoring Carson Palmer onto his shoulders. This offense has shown no sign of progress under Pennington's leadership.
Things could get ugly for the defense in this one. Having no pass rush is a really bad thing against Carson Palmer. The former top pick will have all day to find throwing lanes. Johnson and Houshmandzadeh will have all day to get open. Those guys are good enough route runners to find seams even when Palmer has to get rid of it quickly. The Bengals will strike quickly on offense. Palmer will allow them to sustain momentum and keep the crowd rocking. Cincinnati will feed off this energy en route to an enormous win.
