Bengals 38 Jets 31: Same Old, Same Old

The Jets are 1-6 after a 38-31 loss to the Bengals at Paul Brown Stadium. New York is now on a four game losing streak. This team appears primed to get their second top five Draft pick in three years. There seems to be little progress at this point. The Jets are losing the exact same way every week.

There was a marked improvement in Chad Pennington's play against the Bengals. The quarterback was impressive, completing 20 of 31 for 272 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 1 interception. He moved the ball most of the day against Cincy's struggling defense. He failed to finish drives, though. The Jets had multiple opportunities to take absolute control of the game in the first half but settled for field goals three times they were inside Cincinnati's 30 yard line. In four critical drives, the Jets put no points on the board. Chad  threw a back-breaking interception with under 2:00 left and the Jets down by 8. Johnathan Joseph returned it for a touchdown to ice the game. During this time, the Bengals went from trailing 23-17 to leading 38-23. Chad had chance after chance to lead a drive that would put the Jets back into control. He could not come through in the big spot once again, sealing his team's fate. This game sums up what Chad Pennington is at this point in time. He is a very nice quarterback, capable of leading a successful offense. He is not good enough to overcome significant hurdles when things are going against his team. Even the biggest optimist on the planet cannot deny that the Jets are playing out the string at this point. This team has shown that it is not good enough to win nine straight to end the season. Chad is showing that he cannot take the team to the next level. It is time to see whether Kellen Clemens can be that guy. The Jets have nothing to lose. Things cannot get much worse at this point. They are in desperate need of a spark and a more dynamic offense.

To be fair, one of the critical drives ended because Nick Mangold snapped the ball before Chad called for it, resulting in a fumble and a turnover. This just shows how bad the Jets are going right now. He could not have picked a worse time for such a blunder. Had it happened earlier in the game, it probably would not have been a big deal. One of the first mistakes in the young center's career helped to cost this team a game.

This was a typical game for the defense. The unit came out flying in the first half. The Bengals were stifled in the early going, scoring only 10 points in the first half. Bryan Thomas actually made an appearance, registering a sack. Hank Poteat set up a score with an interception on Carson Palmer. The Bengals moved the ball, but the defense got the big stop every time it needed one. The wheels once against came off in the second half. The run defense was porous as Kenny Watson ran all over New York's front seven. He finished with 130 yards and 3 touchdowns on 31 carries. The Bengals kept feeding him the ball, and he found holes as Dewayne Robertson was manhandled on the nose. It is time to see more of C.J. Mosley and Sione Pouha in the middle of the line. Robertson is not doing the job and is ill-suited for his position. If the Jets insist on running the 3-4 next year, they either need to try Robertson at end or get something of value for him. He just cannot handle the physical demands of nose tackle. Abram Elam in his first extended action with the club missed a big third down tackle and committed a costly personal foul. The Bengals did not need to throw much, but Darrelle Revis made a pair of penalties on third down to extend scoring drives. While Robertson's Elam's, and Mangold's failures are tough to swallow, Revis at least is still learning the position in the NFL. His blunders are more excusable. What is undeniable is that the Jets had a 13 point lead disappear because the defense could not get a stop, a familiar theme in second halves in 2007. The playcalling seems to get more tentative in the second half. Guys play with less intensity. Teams move the ball with ease. Bob Sutton has improved in his scheming from last year, but he cannot seem to adjust as opponents adjust to his defense. He cannot get a complete game from this unit.

Ben Graham set up the winning score by shanking a 20 yard punt. This has just been a rough year for the Aussie punter. He is not alone. He has served the team well so it is tough to be too hard on him. Like Mangold, when his miscues come at bad times, it shows just how many breaks are going against this team.

The receiving duo of Laveranues Coles and Jerricho Cotchery had another big game. Coles had 8 catches for 133 yards and 2 touchdowns. Cotchery had 6 catches for 60 yards. Given the team's quarterback struggles, it is a testament to their talent that the receivers have been this productive. If Kellen Clemens ever gets a chance to play and is as good as advertised, these guys are going to become household names. Coles had touchdown receptions of 57 and 36 yards. He and Cotchery both have the speed to stretch the field. The Jets just do not throw deep much because it is not suited to Pennington's strengths. With Clemens' cannon, this team will be able to utilize its talented receivers more.

Sean Ryan had 3 catches for 46 yards. This was nice production for a blocking tight end. Ryan was also productive in the run game, sealing his men consistently. The Jets really missed nothing without Chris Baker in the lineup.

It was the same old story for Thomas Jones. His 67 yards on 19 carries do not look very impressive, but the run blocking had a lot to do with it. When he got room to run, he made quality runs. When he did not, he was stopped. This team will have plenty of holes to fill in the offseason. The offensive line might not top the list of most observers, but an upgrade is in order.

This season has just been a nightmare for Gang Green. It is not even halfway done. The Jets had the Bengals on the ropes yesterday. Cincy played a sloppy game. They missed tackles, committed stupid penalties, and quit on plays. The Jets had them down but could not put them away. This was a microcosm of the season. Even when the opponent tries to hand this team a game, the Jets cannot win. The same problems that existed four weeks ago are still present. This team is getting no better. The next ten weeks cannot end soon enough. This is yet another long season in this franchise's troubled history.
