Week 13 New York Jets (2-9) at Miami Dolphins (0-11)

The Jets head to Miami this week for a meeting with the archrival Dolphins. Simply put, this is probably the worst matchup that the NFL will produce in 2007. There remains a realistic possibility the AFC East rivals could have the top two picks in the 2008 NFL Draft. The Jets have had an awful season. This team is apparently bad enough to be an underdog against a team winless as the calander turns to December.

Everything has gone wrong for Miami this season. Since the first meeting between the teams in Week 3, the Dolphins have lost their top quarterback, running back, and wide receiver. Trent Green and Ronnie Brown both suffered season-ending injuries. Chris Chambers was mercifully traded to San Diego. These developments have hurt what was already one of the least productive attacks in the NFL. Rookie quarterback John Beck has some potential, but he has shown no signs of being able to lead any sustained drive. A shoddy offensive line does not help matters.

Things are not much better on the other side of the ball. The Dolphins used to have a fierce defense. That unit has aged, and the bottom fell out this year. The team is third in the league against the pass but gives up almost 150 yards on the ground per game. Only the Jets and the Raiders have been worse. Because of this and the anemic offense, Miami's defense cannot get itself off the field. It is no wonder that the Fishies have surrendered over 25 points per contest.

Jay-Jay Taylor has recovered from an awful start to the year to record 6 sacks. He is still productive, but the Jets are in his head right now. It is not bad enough that his team can never seem to win a tight game against his nemesis. D'Brickashaw Ferguson has shut him down in their past two meetings, including the clinic 'Brick put on Jay-Jay back at the Meadowlands in September. He always seems to be spooked by the amount of Jets fans in his stadium for this game. It should be another long day for him. The other face of Miami's defense, Zach Thomas, has been concussed for a while so he will not be able to deliver any of his trademark cheap shots on Jets this week.

If anybody is wondering how this season could get worse, the answer is simple. Being the first to lose against what might be the worst team since the merger would be the ultimate humiliation. It would be especially bitter if the victor was Cameron Cameron's Foul Fishies of Florida.

The Jets might be bad, but there is no way they should lose this game. The ball will probably go to Thomas Jones, who shredded this defense in the first meeting. He will help the Jets control the ball, wearing down the Miami defense. Kellen Clemens will only have to manage this game. Eric Mangini's recent creative surge in defensive scheming will befuddle Beck into making costly errors. Jesse Chatman is not good enough to carry the load by himself. New York will record its third win. Before every season, some fans jokingly claim that they will be happy if the Jets won only two games all year, the two against Miami. 2007 is the ultimate acid test for that theory.
