Hearing Ole' Houn'dog
GOODKNIGHT
There was a Greyhound Bus Driver named Goodknight and I cannot remember his first name.
He was from Arkansas, lived near Little Rock and had developed a friendship with the Governor by way of Fox Hunting. Goodknight was a nice fellow, and had interesting stories to tell of their fox hunting trips. Just matter of fact stories, never bragging, friends having a good time. Some State Troopers having Hounds, went fox hunting too. Goodknight's hounds were equal to the best.
I never knew of Goodknight to 'bid' a regular run. He seemed to prefer the extra board. He also mentioned doing some Preaching here and there.
This Fox Hunting was during the late 1950s and 60s. Then he moved to Tulsa and worked the extra board. Trusted his friends in Arkansas to care for the Hounds. The Tulsa to Dallas Routes remained mostly 2-way roads.
Near Colbert Oklahoma, almost to the Texas line, the road had a long curve, horseshoe shaped, sort of a grassy park within the curve, fairly level ground, road could easily been strait thru. One bad night Goodknight dozed off and indeed drive strait thru. Full load of passengers on that Scenicruiser, no-one hurt, some did'nt even wake up. Goodknight woke up though and drove that bus right back up onto the road after going thru that grassy park. He created a convenient Shortcut.
An Oklahoma Trooper even commended Goodknight for doing such a good job while dozing. Take the Bus and Leave the driving to us. sam

Feeling Surprised
Hearing NOTHIN' BUT A HOUN DOG
DOG FOOD ADS
Whom does'nt like dogs ? Dog food ads too ? Some ads though deserve Special Recognition.
Are the dogs starved before the ad is formulated ? Hopefully not more than a day or two.
The dog rushes to the bowl of heaped up dry morsels, the snout digs in, scatters the food around on the floor, then the most amazing thing happens with one particular dog.
It licks up every scattered morsel before going back to the bowl. MOTHERS, what an opportunity for young children to learn neatness. Those dog food ads are better than the programs. sam

Hearing TCHAIKOVSKY
MUSHROOMS
Had never tried mushrooms after all these years. Was talked into it. Was wise to take a small serving for first trial.
I knew it was a bite of mushroom because it was the only item on the plate. Chewed for a while, smacked lips trying to create a smell and taste and it just was'nt there.
Tried a bigger bite.Same thing. Salt and pepper was no help. I thought well, wait a week and try it again. Must be my Sinuses interfering.
Why can't this happen when going thru Kansas past those Feed Lots ? ? sam

Hearing KATE SMITH
AUTO FOR SALE
Here where I live a neighbor man asked me to go look at his car that is for sale. He wanted advice on determining an asking price.
Even though aged the car looked pretty good. He had quit driving four years ago, traveled some though with his wife driving. He had agreed to keep still and never criticize her driving. He had stopped going anywhere with her, just stayed at home.
He raised the hood, the back turtleshell and opened all four doors and by that time a few others became interested. A man asked him, Julius, what is this indentation like a duck's nest on the floor on this front passenger side ? Oh That ? He looked around to make sure his wife was'nt present, said, that's where I was putting on the brakes when riding with Gracie. sam

Hearing HELLO CENTRAL GIVE ME NO-MAN's LAND
CELL PHONE BODY LANGUAGE
Good entertainment, watching cell phone talkers. No two alike. There's no way to escape observing users of cell phones, short of locking one's self in a private room.
Jogging, Shopping, Driving, Watching Sports. Most vulnerable to being hurt are shoppers moving along behind an excited cell phone user whom is gyrating an arm to show and describe just what is being talked about.
Never mind that the conversation is to someone in Hong Kong.
Hopefully the Fad to use It will in time subside as did the C.B. radio craze.
One can easily see that Self Esteem is boosted by admiring observers. Being stared at is welcome recognition. Makes us wonder which inventions are yet to come.
The Rush Hour Traffic could be solved with an invention to use a 'Remote' at home to do the City Job. Dozens of labor saving inventions are responsible for our having so much spare time. sam

Hearing SHOO FLY PIE
HOUSEFLIES IN THE OLD DAYS
Grandpa , I've heard that houseflies were a problem back in the old days ? Yes, they did present a problem somewhat. Teatowels were used to drive out the flies. Many of the old houses did not have screens. Some did though flies found a way in.
To drive flies out, first prop open the front door. Each person in the house would hold a teatowel in each hand making actions somewhat resembling present day cheerleaders, starting at the back of the house and herding the flies toward the open front door. It would look like blackbirds going south for the winter.
Thanks Grandpa, I'm learning a lot about old times while talking with you. Yes little lady, things were quite a bit different then. After the crash of Wall Street in October 1929 our family moved from a nice modern house in Tulsa to Chouteau, about 35 miles east, a nice little town though few modern conveniences.
Drinking water was drawn from an outside well. Hard water it was called. Contained minerals we could taste. Took a few days to be accustomed to the odd taste. People used 'rainbarrels' to catch soft water compatible with soap, unlike the hard water. There was no 'detergent' as we know it now.
The 'outhouse' was that which we now call the bathroom except no-one ever took a bath out there. The more sophisticated outhouses had two seats. The smaller seat to accomodate a child while visiting there with the mother. Within reach was hanging an outdated Sears and Roebuck catalouge and a bag of 'nubbin' corncobs, providing choice.
Once in a while some City Cousins would visit us for the weekend. Once one complained of the flies bothering him so much while using the outhouse. I said, you are going at the wrong time. The flies never bother me. You City boys are so Dumb. I'll admit being dumb if you will just tell me the best time to go to the outhouse.
It is simple. Go at mealtime, the flies are all at the house. sam

Hearing GOOD TIMES AROUND THE CORNER
COMMENTS, GREAT DEPRESSION
What's this about fast foods being the cheapest ? What about Home Cooking ? Great Grandma or Pa could advise.
Would you believe fast foods are extravagant. Not meaning to spoil your fun, a family visit to a fast food place, money wise, could pay for a week's home cooking.
Grandma might say, go to the Supermarket, shop for potatos, beans, rice, chicken, flour, cooking oil, salt, pepper, garlic.
Boil a chicken, make noodles. Don't know how ? Learn. Use that kitchen range. This is America. Some more wealthy than others. Difficult to understand , especially when driving past a fancy eating place, parking lot full, menu begins at 15 dollars on up.
Causes us to question in our mind, how can they afford it ? The American System is not perfect, however, we whom do our cooking at home after much bargain hunting, prefer America.
So bake our own bread, no 2 dollar a loaf stuff, boil the bargain priced chicken, make those good noodles, cook the rice and beans, make our own cinnamon rolls.
Those people eating in the fancy high price places are basically no happier than we.
Most of us, the 'Poor', Holy Bible Scripture tells us, will always be with us. Also tells us that our lifetime here on Earth is as the blinking of the eye compared to our time in Eternity.
Best learn now from the 'Great Depression Grandmas' because some each day now are on their way to Eternity. sam

Hearing ONCE in a LIFETIME
5-5-5
5-5-5,
Perhaps you may have noticed the 555 in the last entry and thought what is the significance of that? Should have already been in bed,way past bedtime, almost midnight, looking at the calendar and had a feeling that in relation to 'time' that the three 5s sounded very unique.
Today a newscaster justified the uniqueness. According to authorities on these things, only once each 7,000 years will there be 5th day in the 5th month in 5th year of the millenium. sam

Hearing BLUE SKYS - KATE SMITH
LOOKING AT SKY
5-5-5
May 5, 2005,Time marches on.Looking up once in a while we might see a U.F.O. You never know.
I've seen two, already mentioned previously. With a downcast look, more likely to find a penny once in a while.
I suspect that the power of Propulsion is that which gives the U.F.O.terrific speed. The mystery is how can it stop so quickly ? Change directions with oblique angles ?
Not expecting anyone to know, just sort of talking to myself. God knows how it's done.No doubt in my mind.
Most any day now the 'know how' may pop into the mind of another Bill Gates or possibly he himself the secret of Propulsion.
A favorite toy of a boy during the Model-T days would be a couple of the magnets taken from the 'mag' wheel. Can't remember just how many there were forming that 'mag'. The power of propulsion was plain to see as one magnet could push the other. However, turn one over to see the poles grab and hold.
Those antique Model-T magnets continue after all these years to hold their power.
Way back there when Thomas Edison died,he left some notes, some of which stated that if there was any way to communicate where he arrived after death,he certainly would do his best to make contact.
To you whom believe Holy Bible Scripture, and will include any that disagree,if God gives the Nod,amazing powers will be Ours. With God all things are possible.
We down here are the inefficient ones.He throws us crumbs once in a while such as Radio, T V,Computer,Cell Phones,Appliances to provide us with lots of spare time. Are we showing appreciation ? Take time to thank Him ?
Rain falls on the Just and the Unjust. There is unfairness and Evil. The Old Testament relates that for thousands of years.Prophecy has came true, perhaps now in the final stages, dust off the Bible andread Revelations, interpret it to the best of your ability.
Our only Mediator is Jesus Christ, according to the New Testament, ask Him for Guidance. Go to Church for Fellowship,to God for Mediator.
Unbelievers,Jesus Christ has'nt a phone number listed,He Will Hear You Though if You Call On His Name, even if using your last breath. Better late than never. sam

Hearing TILLIE THE TOILER
FUNNIES
Funny Papers ? Were newspaper Funnies funnier in the old days ? The Katzenjammer Kids used a lot of glue to perform their antics. Mutt and Jeff had problems and disagreements. Barney Google was'nt the brightest. Maggie and Jiggs. Popeye and Olive Oyl. Tillie the Toiler. Freckles and his Friends. Wash Tubbs and Captain Easy. Alley OOP. So many others.
We children enjoyed a variety of the comic strips as a result of Dad sending one of us a short distance to the corner of 11th and Harvard in Tulsa to buy the Sunday Edition of the Chicago Herald and Examiner which had to have printed 2 or 3 days before Sunday. A dime paid for the paper which was enormous including the ads. This before the crash of Wall Street in October 1929.
I suspect that Dad enjoyed the cartoon strips too. When we were babies back on the Homestead in Routt County colorado, Dad would read the funnies to us, quite enhanced by tangent stories made to agree with the cartoons. Even then I had began to wonder about so many invisible words. Lots of good stories.
We children attended Sunday School regularly at the College Hill Presbyterian Church at 7th and Columbia Street. Tulsa population then was about 40,000 residents.
The Andy Gump Comic Strip was the most impressive to me , not always funny, sort of had a moral lesson. It's amazing after all these years to remember some of the situations. Andy's Billionaire Uncle, in a lifeboat after a shipwreck , hallucinating, announcing he would give one million dollars for a ham sandwich.
Wealthy people are humans too and some practice philanthropy, while others are of a different ilk.
Many of the wealthy seem to be sincerely trying to help to further Christianity. However, some of the Fulsome Type of the wealthy seem to be Evil people , having power over others in various parts of the World , Dictators and their underlings that receive money from donations intended to help downtrodden people.
Hopefully good will overcome evil and soon. Modern inventions recently have afforded communications around the World.
Regrettfully though, Television and Internet can convey rotten untruths as well as Christian Principles and we may be certain God is watching . He observes the forced removal of 'The Ten Commandments' from public display. Observes non-elected Judges behaving in an Anti- Christian Way.
However, The Christian Gospel is being heard around the World in many languages thanks to Television and Internet and much of the expense being financed by wealthy doners that maintain a low profile.
During 4 years of grade school, 5th through 8th, at Chouteau Oklahoma, each Monday morning there was 'Assembly' by all 12 grades of the School. Lasted about one half hour. We pledged allegiance to the Flag, then heard a Christian Sermon, usually only 15 minutes. All denominations had a turn.
I remember one Sermon by our Janitor, a Baptist minister, had a houseful of kids, not the best behaved in town. He Preached of the wide, easy downhill road and the narrow uphill way. Can still remember his closing words, narrow is the way to salvation and few there be that find it.
Then at another assembly and another preacher, the sermon described the Shepherd that searched for the one that could'nt find the way, found and saved it. Call on the Name of the Lord.
