FUNNIES
Funny Papers ? Were newspaper Funnies funnier in the old days ? The Katzenjammer Kids used a lot of glue to perform their antics. Mutt and Jeff had problems and disagreements. Barney Google was'nt the brightest. Maggie and Jiggs. Popeye and Olive Oyl. Tillie the Toiler. Freckles and his Friends. Wash Tubbs and Captain Easy. Alley OOP. So many others.
We children enjoyed a variety of the comic strips as a result of Dad sending one of us a short distance to the corner of 11th and Harvard in Tulsa to buy the Sunday Edition of the Chicago Herald and Examiner which had to have printed 2 or 3 days before Sunday. A dime paid for the paper which was enormous including the ads. This before the crash of Wall Street in October 1929.
I suspect that Dad enjoyed the cartoon strips too. When we were babies back on the Homestead in Routt County colorado, Dad would read the funnies to us, quite enhanced by tangent stories made to agree with the cartoons. Even then I had began to wonder about so many invisible words. Lots of good stories.
We children attended Sunday School regularly at the College Hill Presbyterian Church at 7th and Columbia Street. Tulsa population then was about 40,000 residents.
The Andy Gump Comic Strip was the most impressive to me , not always funny, sort of had a moral lesson. It's amazing after all these years to remember some of the situations. Andy's Billionaire Uncle, in a lifeboat after a shipwreck , hallucinating, announcing he would give one million dollars for a ham sandwich.
Wealthy people are humans too and some practice philanthropy, while others are of a different ilk.
Many of the wealthy seem to be sincerely trying to help to further Christianity. However, some of the Fulsome Type of the wealthy seem to be Evil people , having power over others in various parts of the World , Dictators and their underlings that receive money from donations intended to help downtrodden people.
Hopefully good will overcome evil and soon. Modern inventions recently have afforded communications around the World.
Regrettfully though, Television and Internet can convey rotten untruths as well as Christian Principles and we may be certain God is watching . He observes the forced removal of 'The Ten Commandments' from public display. Observes non-elected Judges behaving in an Anti- Christian Way.
However, The Christian Gospel is being heard around the World in many languages thanks to Television and Internet and much of the expense being financed by wealthy doners that maintain a low profile.
During 4 years of grade school, 5th through 8th, at Chouteau Oklahoma, each Monday morning there was 'Assembly' by all 12 grades of the School. Lasted about one half hour. We pledged allegiance to the Flag, then heard a Christian Sermon, usually only 15 minutes. All denominations had a turn.
I remember one Sermon by our Janitor, a Baptist minister, had a houseful of kids, not the best behaved in town. He Preached of the wide, easy downhill road and the narrow uphill way. Can still remember his closing words, narrow is the way to salvation and few there be that find it.
Then at another assembly and another preacher, the sermon described the Shepherd that searched for the one that could'nt find the way, found and saved it. Call on the Name of the Lord.
