SACRIFICE "TIL IT HURTS

COPING WITH TUFF TIMES

Should have turned down my Hearing Aid. Hearing this young couple making plans to Sacrifice in order to remain Solvent.

(Wish had known these things back in the 1930s).

She expounded first with,

#1, we will begin Eating Out only Twice a Week.

2- We will drive the Small car except for special occasion.

3- Limit trips to Cripple Creek to Once a Month.

4- Drop Starbucks for MacDonalds Coffee.

5- Cut back on Air Travel.

6- Instead of Gym, do our own yard work.(looking at 'Hubby').

Glad the battery 'went out' on my hearing aid.

That little Lady was certainly willing to Sacrifice.

ECONOMY and 'GREEN'

WHY NOT ?

Monday, May 05, 2008

Why not buy an Electric Car, if it is to be used locally , shopping, going to Church or to School?

Of course, Electric cars have been available for quite some time. Yes, for City Streets.

Just how long ago is 'Quite Some Time'? In 1927 I was 7 years

old living in Tulsa, Booming Times, a couple years or so before

the crash of Wall Street. Tulsa was small then, about 40,000

residents.

We children played ball in a vacant lot with an ally in the

back and a neighbor Lady drove up the ally in her ELECTRIC CAR,

honked to let us know not to run into the ally until she was on

by.

Yes this was in 1927. Dad's old MODEL-T was noisy enough to give warning without honking. Not the ELECTRIC CAR. Quiet as a mouse. That car had a 'Tiller Bar'. No steering wheel. The Lady Driver so Nice and dressed for the occasion in the open ELECTRIC CAR, DUSTER the Wrap was called and a few of us ran to follow and see her turn into the back yard.

We are now 'catching up' to 1927. Tune in your Computer to ELECTRIC CARS to learn of the Choices.

Will your trip be less than 40 miles? Is 25 miles an hour fast enough? Not planning a Road Race? This can be your car.

The Price? Surprising. Of course there are more expensive ones if one cares to be impressive. sam

BLACKBERRIES ARE GOOD

COMMENT TO A 'JOURNAL FRIEND'.Wednesday, April 30, 2008

BARBARA, ONE OF MY PRAYERS IS, ' GOD PLEASE CORRECT THIS EVIL WORLD'. THAT CERTAINLY IS WITHIN HIS POWER HE IS PATIENT AND HOW MUCH LONGER BEFORE THE CORRECTING BEGINS ?

A SCRIPTURE TO THINK ABOUT, 'NARROW IS THE WAY AND FEW THERE BE THAT FIND IT'.

I PRAY FOR WISDOM AND GUIDANCE TO FIND THAT NARROW WAY AND HELP OTHERS TO KNOW JESUS. HE KNOWS HIS SHEEP AND WE KNOW HIM.

NOW ABOUT BLACKBERRIES- - - WHAT A WONDERFUL FRUIT TO HELP GET THROUGH THE GREAT DEPRESSION OF THE 1930s.

SUGAR WAS 5 CENTS A POUND AND WILD BLACKBERRIES PLENTIFUL. STARTING EARLY MORNING OUR FAMILY COULD BY ABOUT 10:AM HAVE SEVERAL GALLON OF BERRIES PICKED. TEMPERATURE GETTING UP NEAR 100 DEGREES.

I CAN STILL REMEMBER THE SOUND OF THE FIRST HANDFUL OF BERRIES HITTING THE BOTTOM OF THE BUCKETS AS WE BEGAN PICKING. CHIGGERS WERE PLENTIFUL TOO. WE TRIED TO DISCOURAGE THE CHIGGERS BY RUBBING A LITTLE BIT OF KEROSENE ON OUR WRISTS AND ANKLES. TICKS TOO WERE THERE. THIS WAS IN EASTERN OKLAHOMA, CHOUTEAU AND LOCUST GROVE WERE THE NEARBY SMALL TOWNS, NEAR THE NEOSHO RIVER.

'OH' THAT BLACKBERRY JELLY AND JAM THAT DEAR OLD MOTHER MADE, OF COURSE WITH HELP OF THE OLDER GIRLS AND GRANDMOTHER NANCY GAGE, ENOUGH OF TO LAST ALL WINTER. MIGHTY FINE EATING ON HOT BISCUITS WITH

REAL BUTTER. ANOTHER DELICACY WAS 'SAND PLUM JAM'. sam

TOMATOS

ANSWERING BY A COMMENT TO 'DAD's' TOMATO GARDEN JOURNAL.

DAD, I CAN VERIFY TOMATO PLANTS AND FRUIT DOING WELL ON SLOPING GROUND.

PEOPLE THAT HAVE VISITED BRANSON MISSOURI CAN ATTEST TO THE ROADSIDE 'STANDS' DURING SUMMER AND SEEING BASKETS OF BIG RED RIPE TOMATOS.

OF COURSE THERE IS NOT MUCH LEVEL GROUND IN THE VICINITY OF BRANSON.

THE SOUTH SLOPE OF THE HILL WITH TOMATOS AND PREFERABLY WITH THE LIGHT COLORED FLINT ROCKS WHICH ARE ABUNDANT IN THAT AREA , THAT HOT SUNSHINE GLANCES AROUND AMONGST THOSE FLINTROCKS AND ENHANCES THE GROWTH OF THE TASTY TOMATOS.

DURING THE 20 YEARS LIVING IN NEARBY SPRINGFIELD, VISITED BRANSON MANY TIMES WITH MY FAMILY. MANY OF MY WORKDAY FRIENDS HAD LIVED AT OR NEAR BRANSON AND KNEW THE FINER POINTS OF RAISING TOMATOS.

DO NOT WATER TOMATOS TOO MUCH. A GOOD WAY IS HAVING A SORT OF LITTLE 'DUCK NEST' AROUND THE ROOT AND HAND WATER THE PLANT LATE AFTERNOON. THE PLANT MAY BE WILTED DOWN SOMEWHAT THOUGH NEXT MORNING WILL BE STANDING UP PROUD AS CAN BE READY FOR ANOTHER HOT DAY.

NEARBY ARKANSAS IS EQUALLY SUITED WITH MANY SOUTH SLOPES AND SUPPLY OF FLINTROCKS THAT OUR CREATOR ARRANGED FOR US A MILLION OR SO YEARS AGO.

OH THOSE DELICIOUS HOME GROWN TOMATOS. WHEN A KID ON A FARM IN ARKANSAS I CARRIED A SALT SHAKER IN THE BIB OF MY OVERHALLS FOR USING ON A TOMATO WHILE RESTING IN THE SHADE OF A NEARBY HICKORY TREE. NEVERMIND IF A LITTLE JUICE SQUIRTED OUT. WE FARM BOYS JUST ACCEPTED THOSE THINGS, HAPPY TO BE HEALTHY AND ALIVE. sam

DOG GONE OVER THE MOUNTAIN

Dog Lovers

Often tourists travel with the Family Dog. At the Jack Slater's General Store along Oak Creek Grade Road south of Canon City Colorado is a parking lot which often has cars of visiting tourists.

My newly built mountain home was on the opposite side of a mountain near the General Store. The footpath over the mountain was occasionally used.

One evening about Sundown, sitting in my yard, watching the Stars beginning to appear, clear air at 8500 feet altitude, a pleasure to see the stars appear.

Glancing up the trail that comes from the top of the mountain saw what appeared to be a small black bear. Stopped watching for stars and watched the Cub take a couple steps closer and raise the head turning side to side.

The evergreen trees shaded the trail even in daytime and now with dusk being here, I watched for a mama bear to appear near her cub.

Not so, down the trail trotted the small animal which stopped and now was plain to see that it was a black Dog. None of my neighbors had a black dog. I called it to come and only a step or two and stood still and just looked and a slight whine came.

Plainly it was afraid and with my urging she came and let me pet her. A beautiful little dog which was thirsty and hungry. I suspect that she had came from the General Store where a tourist had mistakenly drove off without her.

At this time I was working to build a fence so could keep a dog. Small dogs are too vulnerable in the mountains without a protective fence around the home.

Next morning I took this young dog with me to the 7:00 AM coffee time at the General Store and no one had reported a lost dog. Jack Slater agreed to keep the dog there for a day or two, hoping the Family would come looking for her.

A lady from Westcliffe (15 miles South) stopped in and fell in love with the little black dog and Jack allowed her to take it.

Later after finishing a fence encircling a couple acres I did get a 6 month old Bird Dog which received the name BEAR. sam

POWDERING OF SNOW APRIL 17 2008

This was a very light snow, and will mostly be gone by nightfall. In

the nearby mountains, heavy snow is possible in April or even in May.

A few years ago when I was living up in the mountains 15 miles South of Canon City, elevation 8500 feet, on a nearby hiking trail there were three lost their lives in an April Storm which produced a couple feet of snow. Temperature was not severe though in the blizzard condition they did not stick close together.

Two young boys and their Scoutmaster were searched for over a period of two days, having left no information where they would be hiking.

If a person has ever been in such a blizzard they can know the possibility of becoming seperated. Voices do not carry far with the howling and shreiking of the wind.

The boys were found near the hiking trail though seperated and died from freezing and the man was found Seven miles away, had apparently tried his best to find help and also died of freezing.

It is so important to leave information of the localities being visited so searchers will know just where to begin searching.            sam

Hearing AMAZING GRACE

QUESTION TO THE POPE

QUESTION FOR THE POPE

This question from a High School Graduate of the year 1937, having read the New Testament several times, believing every word of the HOLY Bible.

1st Timothy CHAPTER 2 Verse 5 reads, 'FOR THERE IS ONE GOD,and ONE Mediator between GOD and MEN,the man CHRIST JESUS.

I am sure that YOU are aware of young boys being molested by Priests acting as Mediator between the Child and GOD.

Surely you know of the Lawsuits and Payoffs. To be fair, perhaps the News Reports were untrue of the molestations and Payoffs.

These words written here are not meant as a bad reflection on Sincere Loyal Catholic Citizens.

I am a Child of GOD, 87 years old and Regularly Pray Directly to the FATHER,SON and HOLY SPIRIT.

Is that not Permissable for any of WE whom have accepted and WORSHIP JESUS CHRIST as our LORD AND SAVIOR ?

Please give us your thoughts on this.

sam, Canon City, Colorado.

EMBELLISH and ENHANCE

Howard Cosell was a master at it. When the admirable Ali Muhammad was nearing the end of his Career, I remember Howard Cosell announcing the Fight. If listening without seeing TV, one may have believed that Ali was beating the tar out of his opponent.

David Corn may have learned from Howard Cosell how to embellish a situation.

Today, Saturday, March 22, 2008, watching and hearing David Corn give great praise to Candidate Obama for such a wonderful and convincing speech for convincing Citizens of America that he, Mr. Obama has good judgment and qualifications to be President.

Howard Cosell probably would not have been as convincing.
