POWDERING OF SNOW APRIL 17 2008

This was a very light snow, and will mostly be gone by nightfall. In

the nearby mountains, heavy snow is possible in April or even in May.

A few years ago when I was living up in the mountains 15 miles South of Canon City, elevation 8500 feet, on a nearby hiking trail there were three lost their lives in an April Storm which produced a couple feet of snow. Temperature was not severe though in the blizzard condition they did not stick close together.

Two young boys and their Scoutmaster were searched for over a period of two days, having left no information where they would be hiking.

If a person has ever been in such a blizzard they can know the possibility of becoming seperated. Voices do not carry far with the howling and shreiking of the wind.

The boys were found near the hiking trail though seperated and died from freezing and the man was found Seven miles away, had apparently tried his best to find help and also died of freezing.

It is so important to leave information of the localities being visited so searchers will know just where to begin searching.            sam

I DID A LOT OF HIKING AS A BOY SCOUT BUT NEVER IN SUCH DANGEROUS CONDITIONS.    WE CAMPED WITH A SMALL CABIN THAT HAD A FIREPLACE THOUGH ONLY ENOUGH HEAT WAS FELT NEARBY.   SEVERAL OF THE BOYS TRIED SLEEPING IN TENTS BUT CAME IN BECAUSE OF THE COLD I REMEMBER.   THIS WAS A TIME IN A GROUP CALLED 'INDIAN GUIDES' WHICH WAS A FATHER AND SON GROUP.     MARK

Very beautiful, but I dont think I would like to hike in the snow. I just dont like any cold at all. If nothing else, I hope people learned from that tragedy to do just what you said. Let people know you are going.

Good advice, not that I know that much about snow. Seems like good common sense. Paula
