I am on the road a lot, and I am not a big fan of talking on the phone, but I am a huge fan of text messaging. I wrote the client piece of code for SMS in AIM WIN years ago (2001, I believe)...all the years blend together. ;-)
I know my buddies text message me all the time, some have my phone number in my buddy list, though I also have IM Forwarding turned on for one of my SNs. Needless to say, this is a great way for people to get in touch with me for last minute changes to plans etc.
For more robust conversations, I have an IPaq that has AIM loaded on it. With my built in bluetooth, or built in Wireless-B card, I can sign on any T-Mobile Hotspot, or bluetooth access point to send and receive IMs. Check out http://mymobile.aol.com/portal/im/index.html
to get the latest AIM mobile stuff. Here you can download portable clients based on service providers. So far the clients for mobile devices have been not as good as i had hoped...but frankly it is hard to get a 350 person buddy list to display on a 640x420 screen at best. I think powerful sort functionality is key. However, phones with T9 to make it easier to type responses back. I would love to hear people's opinions on this, to see suggestions on how to improve the mobile experience on phones.
Sometimes when I am in airport lounges where there is a desktop, I can use AIM Express (our java client), http://www.aim.com/get_aim/express/aim_expr.adp
The client is great to use, when you are on a machine without admin access. AIM Express has made great leaps and bounds since its early incarnations. The client has a very nice look and feel, and actually is pretty fast, as compared to the original client from 1998-99 timeframe.
In the future, and for that matter right now, I think you will see more VOIP features built into IM clients. I would love to see where instead of picking up the phone to call my brother in his car, that I can just select his screen name to place a call. Long term, I could see an opt-in feature using location services to tell me where someone is, so I can tell my buddy, "Hey, you are near the store, pick up some soda and chips for the game."
If you guys have some ideas or questions about this, don't hesitate to ask...
