AIM Plugins

Point the Finger - Program the Dead

Today Justin released some plugins designed to be used with Triton Beta 3.  He mentioned a while back that Triton would support plugins and this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Justin wrote almost all of these, thus the name JAMS (
Juberti's AIM ModificationS), I managed to contribute the MyTunes plugin...here is the synopsis from Justin's blog:

Note: JAMS 1.0 requires AIM Triton Beta 3. If you install JAMS under AIM Triton Beta 2, you will probably find that AIM Triton no longer works. If you have any problems using JAMS 1.0, an uninstaller is included.

Once you install JAMS, the next time you sign on with AIM Triton, you will see this icon -> in your system tray. If you double-click it, it will bring up the plugin management UI. From there you can enable, disable, or configure any of the installed AIM Triton plugins.

Besides the plugin management plugin, JAMS 1.0 includes the following plugins (note that plugins are disabled by default, and need to be manually enabled through the plugin UI)
* Colorizer - automatically applies a color to your outgoing IMs and chat messages that changes over time.
* LWAway - automatically sets AIM as away when you lock your workstation (for Win XP users, Windows Key + L), and comes back when you unlock.
* MyTunes - automatically adds the current track you are listening to in WinAmp to your AIM profile and status text. (Will support AOL Media Player and iTunes in the future)

You can download the plugins here.

One more item of note, we are going to create a dev site for these plugins where you will be able to see how to get started writing your own plugins for Triton.

Also, to reiterate what Justin said, we are looking for a contractor in the DC Area to write AIM Plugins.  The job specs are on Justin's blog.

Hey. You guys are doing a great job on triton. I'm not using it yet, but I will be by Beta 5. Two quick comments. I know it's difficult since free programs (any messaging program i.e msn) is supported by ads, but please, consider cutting the ads from AIM Triton. I know you know have the option to place them where you want, but still, people get annoyed by this. If AIM could be the first corporate messenger without ads, the whole tech community would be very impressed. Also, for the final version of AIM, have the installer only install AIM. It's time people stop calling AIM and AOL products bloat

I've got to say, I'm impressed.  This is the biggest thing (in my opinion) so far that separates AIM from the competition.

On another note, I got a chance to install Beta3, and it's definitely improving.  The memory usage is down by about 25MB for me, and the it seems to be responding faster (although still a little laggy - yes, I know it's just a beta, only making an observation).

One question I had - I noticed that viewing idle time is no longer an option.  You can see idle (IF no away message is on - if it is, you just see away), but not how long, as you can in all the non-Triton series clients.  Is this intentional, or just something that hasn't been added yet?  I certainly hope it's not being intentially left out.  On the same topic, the coloring difference (IMO) between active and idle is similar, and a little more drastic a difference would be nice.

Hopefully my comments are at least somewhat useful, and not just a waste of your time :)  Thanks again for blogging!

Excellent news! I was just wondering if the AIM Dev's plan on implementing logging into Triton, or if that would be made into a plugin?
