ETech Day 4 & An Upcoming Road Trip

Tomorrow its back to the east coast for 2 days.  On Sunday I am headed out with Justin to San Jose, CA to go to the  VON Conference and GDC Conference.     We will be there from March 13th to March 23rd.  If anyone wants to get together with us while we are there to discuss Open AIM and the like, don’t hesitate to contact me via IM or email.

Now for today's notes...

Today was definitely wrap up day at the conference, when people are dragging their feet exhausted from going from session to session.  The booths are taken down, and the sessions get a little bit more out on the edge of realism.  We got a look at the future of telephony services…

Shawn Carnell from AOL presented on microformats, and he got a very positive response from the crowd.  Yahoo gave a presentation on their new search strategy.  While I have been skeptical all week with Yahoo’s API announcements and talk about challenging Google and Microsoft, today’s session really made me more of a believer.  They seems very committed to having a developer network and making search results more relevant by using the concept of local search.

After lunch today we went to the USS Midway which was an aircraft carrier that served during the Vietnam War.  While wewere touring the ship, we saw what I would consider the first IM client with voice.  Apparently this device could communicate with specific areas of the ship (these would be the buddies), and the device allowed for speech between the two areas of the ship (the first p2p audio connection).  In any case here is the photo, note the "Press to talk" button on the bottom right hand corner of the device (Nextel ripped that off from the Navy)…
