We're Number 1...and other random thoughts

Watching 30 Rock

So the Wall Street Journal believes that AIM is the number one instant messaging client available on the internet.  This is definitely vindication after all the work, late nights, and criticism we got during the first days of AIM Triton.  Chat rollover was a favorite feature of the reviewer.  If you are unfamiliar with chat rollover, this is the ability to add a 3rd person into a one-to-one conversation turning it into a multi-party chat.  We also support voice chat rollover as well.  The author pointed out that the buddy list is cleaner than our competitors, and was also impressed with our photo sharing feature and the ability to send messages to mobile devices.

Well, I am really excited they thing the client is good, but I think we still have more that we can do to improve the client.  I think we need to run in less memory and allow for UI customization.  Video and audio call setup and signaling need to be perfect every time.  Last but not least we need to get better support in the client for plugins and add-ons.  I know many of these we are actively working on, and in fact some of these you will be seeing very very soon. I am still concerned by how many reports I see of connection issues but I am hopeful that we can fix these.

Some random thoughts
----------------------------------------------------
I am convinced that Thursday night on NBC is funnier today than it was back when Friends and Seinfeld were on Thursday together.  My Name is Earl, The Office, Scrubs and 30 Rock are great together and keep me entertained for a solid 120 minutes.  There were never 4 solid shows back in the day with Friends and Seinfeld, and lets be honest after season 2 of Friends it was not as funny.

For the longest time I have used Google to search for MSDN topics for coding help.  Lets be honest MSDN search is really awful, but Microsoft Live Search is fantastic.  It found articles and other MSDN help that Google did not find.  I learned that today when investigating an issue where in Windows Vista we are not getting WINSOCK events as quickly as we did in Windows XP.  In fact if you are using Vista and AIM 6.1, and you lose your connection, you may not know for up to 4 minutes.

Well... It seems like you guys are on the right track. What was said is true... And I'm excited to see what the AIM team is going to bring. You've come a long way since Triton, and I'm glad to see the improvements.

Thanks for a great product =)
