Tomorrow I make the journey back home across the pond, but before I head back, I went to a great workshop run by Rasmus Lendorf from Yahoo and the founder of the PHP project. Rasmus spent time going over the ins and outs of PHP5 and the basics of wiring PHP up to AJAX. He also showed how to avoid cross site script attacks and some tools he uses to make sure his pages secure and performant.
Rasmus's presentation can be found here.
So what goodies are in PHP5? From my perspective it appears that PHP is becoming easier to use for former OO/COM programmers. There is refcounting, getters, setters and calls. There is added support for streaming and reading and writing from zlib. XML handling has been rewritten in PHP5, to make it easier to read in DOMs and apply XSL to your site.
On a side note, Rasmus told me Flickr now supports geo-locating photos, so I will be adding support in Ambient Messaging to tie geo-location in with the AIM Location Services.
I will try and do an update this weekend on some plugin stuff, and will get the Tech Trends post up as well.
