The highlight for me today was checking out the session Ready for Prime Time: TV Comedy of Today. Scheduled to attend was Rob Corddry the actor from The Winner and Daily Show alum, Al Jean a writer from the Simpsons, and Seth MacFarlane creator of the Family Guy. In grand Hollywood tradition, none of these guys showed up. Instead they rolled out Mike Henry the voice of Cleveland and a writer on the Family Guy, Ricky Blitt the writer of The Ringer, Family Guy and The Winner, and Tim Long who is a longtime writer on the Simpsons.
OK, so it was not the "A List," but it was really awesome to hear Mike do the voice of Cleveland, and honestly these guys were hysterical. In between jokes, they actually made some very interesting remarks on what they believe is going on in the world of censorship, technology and what keeps them funny after so many years of writing the same characters.
- They all hate Fox, I mean they truly despise it. Tim made mention if it were not for Simpsons, Family Guy, American Idol, and the TV test pattern, Fox would be bankrupt.
- They all condone their own content being pirated, in other words, all the unauthorized videos on YouTube, etc.
- Mike Henry mentioned a Family Guy movie will appear in the future
- Ricky used many vulgar words to describe Trey Parker and Matt Stone of South Park. While all three said there is no rivalry at all between Family Guy or Simpsons, which I am guessing is not 100% truth, Ricky and to a degree Mike think that South Park has turned into a farce with Parker and Stone being "total jerks". (He used a much more vulger term, but the blog is a PG blog.)
- There was also a mention of Stewie finally being able to accomplish his original goal of killing Lois.
- They told very funny stories about how Fox has censored their ideas and funny lines, sometimes with undesirable effects. For instance they had a line that Fox told them to change, so their suggestion was actually a more obscene double entendre that they did not realize. There are many comparisons between us AIM developers and the writers of these shows. The writers take chances and then the censors tell them no. In our case, we write code that testers and product managers censor. Pirates are we.
- Afterwards the writers stayed around to chat and answer questions, and when I mentioned to them that we use their content to keep us entertained on those late nights while working, they asked what I did. Well, apparently they all use AIM to communicate with family and at the studios. It was almost as if they were as excited talking about AIM with me as I was talking to them about Simpsons and Family Guy.
On that note, my adventures in Austin are coming to an end. SXSW has been very successful, and the feedback from the panel was fantastic. I will be getting back to doing my normal posting routine, coming up soon will be a post about social networks and the hub and spoke system.
