Ben Stein Expelled

In the extremely  unlikely event that anybody cares what I think about Ben Stein's Expelled  film, it's at one of my other blogs:  http://canfeath.blogspot.com

White People Stuff

I gotta start a blogroll or whatever AOL calls the list of blogs you read all the time.  Near the top will be this one.  Entry 78, about wanting your kids to be bilingual, is hilarious.  One comment said "I just pooped my pants."  Well I peed mine.  It's that funny.

Hearing Doris Day

Leave Doris Alone!

Come on, you guys at the tabloid paper.  Leave Doris Day alone!  Must you dredge up tales of her alleged  hot romps with half of the male population?  The poor woman is in her 80's and I don't want to know about it even if it's true.  She will always be the cute girl next door goody-two-shoes for me.  I will have it no other way.  OK?

Public Radio's Numbers

It surprises me somewhat when I run across someone who has never been transported by the magic of radio to Garrison Keillor's  Lake Wobegon, Minnesota on a Saturday Night.  But realistically, his 4 million listeners is a tiny, tiny drip, not even a full fledged drop in the bucket when compared to the huge millions of folks watching TV at any given moment.

Swan Song Debunked?

This is terrible.  Marilyn vos Savant, so beautiful and smart, has destroyed a favorite myth or legend or whatever it is.  She says swans don't really sing before they die.  If Marilyn says it, I believe it.  But I don't like it. It's hard to let go of things I always believed that ain't so.   That is happening a lot lately.

R.I.P.  Local Radio

There's one thing about power outages that puts me in a state of depressed nostalgia.  Or is it nostalgic depression.  Anyway ...There's no point in having a battery operated radio because there's no local radio to turn to.    No local radio news. I was in radio when it was an important part of the community.  You could could find out everything from who died (yes, there were daily radio  obits) to who hit a pole and took out the power.  Local radio announcers, news directors and deejays were public figures.  We were stars.   Today's only radio stars are Rush Limbaugh and Howard Stern.  I'm not about to buy batteries to listen to them.

Blessed Quietness

We lost power for over an hour.  I loved it.  No noisy furnace blower.  No TV pitchmen yelling at me to buy their cars and furniture, telling me how happy they are to open another charge account for me even if I'm bankrupt and up to my ass in debt.  How can those people sleep at night?? I could live pretty comfortably in total silence.  I guess it would drive most people crazy.  I shoulda been a monk.

Depression in Men

I'm in an online group of antique radio buffs, many of them seniors,  with a sub group where we talk about anything and everything.  I was moved to tears by a post from a fellow pleading for help with his serious depression and the 38 replies, most of them admitting that they, too have in the past or are currently suffering from it.  It's encouraging that guys are able to talk about it.  Maybe it's the internet's anonymity that lets us spill our guts.  Guys need to do that.

Wow!  $1,000 off!

If you can sell me a hearing aid, a car or some other big ticket item for a thousand dollars or more off the regular price, one of two things is happening:  You're so desperate to sell that you'll take a loss or the orginal price was greatly inflated.  I choose #2.
