Hearing This American Life
Fresh New Face in 'Lincoln Heights'
It’s been hard to miss the number of advertisements the last
couple of weeks on AOL Black Voices for ‘Lincoln Heights’
which debuts tonight on ABC Family.
Luckily for the advertisers who paid good money for ad
space, ‘Lincoln Heights’ is one of the brand new shows
for 2007 that is actually compelling and features a predominantly black cast.
You have to remember that the show is on ABC Family which
was originally founded by televangelist Pat Robertson in 1977.
So no sex. No blood. No cursing.
(People do get shot, however)
That’s quite a challenge for a show about a cop’s family moving
back to its hometown of Lincoln
Heights and facing the
same struggles that forced him to leave his old neighborhood.
Russell Hornsby plays Eddie Sutton, a Los Angeles police officer who balances the
duties and responsibilities of being a cop along with raising a family.
With a growing family and a lack of space, he decides to
move his family back to his hometown of Lincoln Heights
as he buys a former crack house and decides to convert it into a livable
situation.
But as Hornsby finds out, neighbors aren't too fond of having the police living next door.
Thirteen episodes have been ordered for ‘Lincoln Heights’
which airs on Monday at 7:00p.m. and hopefully ABC Family will order more for the
future.
It’s a perfect family show for you and the kids which is
starting to become more and more rare with today’s programming on TV.

Hearing Fresh Prince of Bel Air
There are Black Women Surfers ... on TV
Spending some time at home has allowed me to check out some digital channels that I don’t have access to back at school.
One of those channels is Noggin, which turns into “The N”after 6p.m. Noggin/The N is the sister channel to Nickelodeon and falls under the Viacom family.
I’ll admit, the programming on The N is a little young for my everyday viewing pleasure but the show ‘Beyond the Break’ caught my eye.
Maybe it’s because I’m looking for a replacement for ‘The O.C.’, which is getting axed.
Or maybe I miss those yearly vacations to Hawaii as a kid.
Or maybe it was to see Tiffany Hines in a bikini.
‘Beyond the Break’ is a show about four women trying to make it in the world of professional surfing.
Just imagine the movie ‘Blue Crush' meets ‘Saved By The Bell.’
A surfboard company sponsors the four women as they live in a house together and compete in surfing competitions, which is not much different from what real professional surfboarders do in Hawaii.
Hines plays Birdie Scott, a 19-year-old surfer from Chicago who ditched college in order to pursue a surfing career.
Now you know black people aren’t fond of the water, let alone the beach…
…but a black woman who surfs, that’s impressive.
(OK, OK, so they have stunt doubles for some of the scenes, but still, you couldn’t pay to get me on a surfboard.)
A perfect show for teens, ‘Beyond the Break’ airs on The Non Friday at 8:30p.m.

Chris Brown Runs It on 'The O.C.'
Even though I had a feeling it was coming, I was sad to read
yesterday that Fox canceled ‘The O.C.’ after four seasons on the air. The last
episode of the show will air on February 22 but in the meantime, R&B
crooner Chris Brown will be appearing on the show.
Brown made his debut on ‘The O.C.’ tonight and originally
the plan was to have the 17-year-old to appear on eight episodes but that was
reduced to just three.
It only took four seasons for ‘The O.C.’ to get a person of
color on the show and at least the writers didn’t portray Brown as the typical
“black” teenage male.
You know – pants sagging, baseball cap to the side, “Yo, yo,
baby, yo.”
Instead, Brown was a band geek who was a good student in the
classroom.
But just when I thought he would be able to escape without
any controversy, the trailer for next week’s episode shows Kaitlin, the sister of the late Marissa Cooper, falling for
Brown’s character, Will.
Once you go black, you never go
back.
The term “darkalicious” was also
used … darkalicious?
Chris Brown is hardly dark!
He lighter than me! So is it just
a term to refer to blacks? Don’t mind me, I am just trying to stir up the pot
and I have never heard that term before.
I blame Fergie of course for all
this and that catchy ‘Fergalicious’ song.
Would that make me hatealicious
then?
My writing stays vicious.
I be up in the blog just working
on my wittiness.
Tyra’s my witness.
I put those celebrities on rock, rock.
And ya’ll be blowing up the blog just to read what I got.
Holla!

Hearing Testify - Rage Against The Machine
Season 1 of Girlfriends on DVD
Here is a late Christmas gift from me to you.
Somehow this flew under the radar but it was announced last
month that Paramount/CBS will finally release the wildly popular show ‘Girlfriends’
on DVD.
The four-disc set of Season 1 will be released on February
27, 2007.
All 22 episodes from Season 1 are included but there are no extras on
the DVD.
Girlfriends is a sophisticated comedy series that invites
viewers into the lives of four professional African American women living in
Los Angeles who are struggling with the weighty issues of life - men, love,
money -- and more men. As they search for happiness in all its elusive forms,
the four girlfriends rely on each other for support, reality checks, advice and
for the laughter that everyone needs to make it in this crazy place we call the
modern world.

Feeling Frustrated
Hearing Lady - Fela Kuti
O'Donnell is 'O' so Out of Line
Way back in September, long before I managed to piss people
off, one of my first posts on Everybody Hates Marcus was about Rosie
O’Donnell’s first day on ‘The View’ and did we care as an African-American
audience.
The Star Jones Reynolds departure from ‘The View’ still left
a sour taste in some people’s mouth so all eyes were focused on O’Donnell who
replaced Meredith Vieira who departed for the ‘Today’ show.
But nearly four months later, I’m blogging about Rosie and
‘The View’ again because it’s ironic all of the things that O’Fat has been able
to get away with her first 90 days on the show …yet they couldn’t wait to get
rid of Jones Reynolds.
Granted, by now you all know my stance on Jones Reynolds
*cough, PHONY, cough*.
But in terms of stirring up trouble, minus her whole wedding
debacle where corporate sponsors donated wedding items in return for a
glorified shout out on ‘The View,’ Jones Reynolds stayed out of trouble.
Which might explain why ratings were reaching an all-time
low with her on the show because controversy = ratings.
So it’s no shock that ratings have been up since O’Fat
plopped herself in the lead chair of ‘The View’ and took over (literally) in
September.
Once she was settled came the public spats with Kelly Ripa
and Donald Trump.
But that’s mild compared to her Dec. 5 outburst
where she mocked the Chinese language.
Common sense would tell you after the whole Michael Richards
snafu that people (especially of the clear complexion) would try to be a little
more racially sensitive.
Oh no, not O’Fat.
You would think as an openly gay woman in this country she
would be a little more sensitive to other minority groups but that didn’t stop
her from saying:
“You know, you can imagine in China it's like, 'Ching-chong,
ching-chong. Danny DeVito. Ching-chong, ching-chong-chong. Drunk. The View.
Ching-chong.”
It would be like me saying:
“You know, you can imagine as a lesbian it’s like nothing
but mullets, flannel shirts, wearing Birkenstock's and listening to K.D. Lang
and Melissa Etheridge”
It doesn’t feel very good, now does it, O’Fat?
In case you missed it, here are her outbursts since she
joined ‘The View’ in September.

Feeling Happy
Hearing Stephen A. Smith (Yelling, of course)
Wake Up, Star Jones, Wake Up!
Talk about an “N-Word” wake up call…
Star Jones Reynolds went from co-hosting ‘The View’ on ABC
to hosting the ‘Star Jones Reynolds Report’ on TV One.
The Entertainment Newswire’s Karu F. Daniels first reported
on this story as it marks Jones' first return to television since her ugly
departure from ‘The View’
And no knock on TV One, which I absolutely love, but it’s no
ABC.
Not even close.
Mrs. Everybody Hates Marcus chimed in and said “…it’s like
going from LV
(Louis Vuitton) to the 99 cent store.
She’s a keeper.
According to the TV One website, “The Star Jones Reynolds
Report” will cover topics that touch all of America in some aspect but will
cover them from an African American perspective. From celebrity adoptions to
police brutality to deficiencies in the public school system, no topic is off
limits in this all-new TV One special.”
“Wake up, N-Word, Wake up”
(If Paul Mooney refuses to say the word, I will do the same.
Way to go, Kramer.)
But with Star Jones Reynolds, it’s always “Me, Me, Me!”
Somehow every story she managed to tell, she would find a
way to make it about her.
Was this the right first move for Jones Reynolds who is
still trying to recover from Barbara Walters airing her out?
Personally, I don’t think so.
She managed to do a good job of staying out of the news and
I am sure was making moves behind the scenes. But if you are going to make a comeback, come correct.
She’s hardly strapped for cash so financially she can more
than afford not to work.
Maybe she needs the extra dough to bankroll her husband’s
wardrobe? (How ya doin!)
But in all seriousness, Jones Reynolds has to be burning
upset inside at Rosie O’Donnell and the direction ‘The View’ has taken since
she arrived. Ratings are up since O’Donnell’s arrival and we all know
that she is able to get away with just about anything (The Kelly Ripa saga,
piss off the Chinese, Donald Trump) and not have to worry about losing her job.
Let’s step your game up in ’07, Star. Next stop after TV One
is public access and we all know you are better than that.
