Flipping the Channels with Tony Rock

I had a 3:30 scheduled with actor/comedian Tony Rock today. And like any good journalist, I waited until the last minute to write down my questions.

At 3:20 I get a phone call and look at my phone only to realize it's Rock calling.

“Wow, you’re on time … early even” as I try to scribble down some last minute notes.

“I am trying to put an end to the myth about CP time,” Rock joked.

Rock plays the role of Dirk Black on the CW’s ‘All of Us.’ The brother of Chris Rock, Tony is also a stand up comedian as well.

Rock will also be hosting the Pre-Awards reception and working the Red Carpet for Black Voices coverage of the 2006 Black Movie Awards. You can vote here on who you think will win and tune in on Wednesday, October 18th at 10PM on TNT to see if you were right.

Read about who Rock thinks will win ‘Flavor of Love,’ and why he wants to be on ‘The Bachelor.’

Tell me about your character on ‘All of Us,’ Dirk Black?
Professionally, Dirk Black is a co-host of a TV show. Sort of Dr. Phil-ish but more urban, along with his best friend Robert James (Duane Martin). In his personal life, he’s a player. He is trying to balance fatherhood along with keeping up a playboy image.

What are your thoughts about the show moving from the UPN to the CW?
I think it's going to help us out. It was meant to help the UPN and CW in terms of viewership and the amount of money advertisers put up. We are on more markets so it seems like a win-win.

‘All of Us’ was closed to being canned during the transition phase. How was that whole ordeal?
We have been on the bubble twice. After season 1 we were good and after season 2 and 3 we were on the bubble. It’s nothing you can really control. Once we finish that last day, I’m going to work on something else. I’m a hustler.

Are there any surpriseswe can expect this season on ‘All of Us?’
There will be, but I am not allowed to say. Will [Smith] has sworn me to secrecy.

What do you think about the whole Jill Marie Jones situation over on ‘Girlfriends’ with her leaving the show?
I don’t know what happened. I’m trying to get to the bottom of it just like you. I heard it was a money thing and all these other stories. Toni was my favorite character on the show too.

Favorite Sitcom:
It would probably be ‘The Jeffersons.’ As a kid in Bed-Stuy, just the whole idea of moving on up and that it’s possible, even in this fictitious world of TV. ‘A Different World’ and ‘The Cosby Show’ as I got older.

Favorite Cartoon:
Bugs Bunny.

Favorite Game Show:
There is only one game show … Price is Right. You wake up in the morning and your grandmother is glued right in front of the TV. You got your Plinko, your Cliff Hangers with the yodelers, the dice game. The Showcase Showdown. The best part though is the people holding out for the cars on the Showcase Showdown. Black people always passed. It could be a trip to the moon and they would go “Naw, I’ll pass.” They would hold out for some crappy ass Chevrolet Cavalier.

One channel people would be surprised that I watch?
Telemundo. The finest women you will find in your life doing some of the worst acting. I don’t understand what they are saying but the music and dancing is worth it all.

Who do you think will win ‘Flavor of Love?’
That’s my guilty TV pleasure. Deelishis. I think New York is going to leave. She will
voluntarily leave.

Would you be on the new ‘Flavor of Love’ spin-off?
Hell no. I would be on the ‘Bachelor’ though. Nobody ever gets married now. They just date all the girls and they just say let's be friends. You have the potential opportunity to have sex with 30 women and not have to marry them.

Who is funny? Chris Rock not Tony Rock, his apple rolled away from the three while Chris stayed.  I hate what CW did my show "Half and Half" and kept the no - funny "All of us".. I do not know one person that watches that lame show since they booted Martin fiance.

Drew is not  playing Tony on "Everybody Hate Chris" if you were a real fan you would know this.
The Question about Jill Marie Jones, what did that have to do with this interview? nothing...
These "good journalist" kill me with there interviews, always asking about someone or something that the person is not involved in.  And Tony answer was, he heard it was about money...well that's the rumor...

And this time it is you.  Girl whatever Tony Rock is doing his thang and I am glad to see it.  It is hard to come out from under the shawdow of his brother Chris Rock who has made his name big.  and to see Tony Rock come out and shine as bright as he do next to Chris is a beautiful thing.

I was a die hard fan of the show but fell off when schedules started to change usually that is the sign of a show being cut. Then I hear his brother saved his show.  I'm all for black shows, and watch just about all, to support ratings n all but when your show has been rumored to have been saved by brother with clout, it is time to cut your losses n try to find another gig. Do you want your name know as he is funny but his brother had to save his show twice. I like your show I think I like you more than the show. I would have liked something to have jumpped off with lovita because that is a show that has potential to grow for some yrs we haven't had that story line in a min since (Martin, n you guys i.e lovita & Dirk  have good comedy chemistry) from those black shows that tend to survive in our world.  Good luck in your career, also the first time your show was in jeopardy if u were a true hustler you would have had something popping back then so there would not have been a needing a sec time your show was on the chopping block.
P.S with u on Flavor, want deelishis  to win. She is mature n less drama. Let some other dude get ny they will deserve eachother just like he let Bridgitt Neilson go it was meant to be, have as much fun as Deelishis will let u for now. peace world, luv ya. Stay true to you.
