The WWE: Stereotyping Since 1952

Guilty pleasure number two behind 'The O.C.' is professional wrestling of all things.

Like most boys growing up, I got sucked into watching wrestling at a young age and nobody could tell me a thing about it being fake. I used to swear up and down that wrestling was as real as they come.

As I discovered that girls were a helluva lot better than watching men wrestle in tights, I started watching less and less.

But when I got involved with the Big Brother/Big Sister program, my little, like myself at 11, was a huge wrestling fan. And for the interest of having something to talk about each week, I got back on the WWE bandwagon.

The one aspect of wrestling that always intrigued me were the black wrestlers. A dime a dozen back in the 90s, you couldn't help but to root for the wrestler that shared the same skin color as you.

But damn, the owner of the WWE Vince McMahon doing us grimy back in the day.

As my friend recalled, you had the Jive Soul Bro, (Slick) the Bird Man (Koko B. Ware and those MC Hammer pants) and the modern day slave. (Virgil)

And really, that was about it.

Towards the end of the 90s you finally had your first black Intercontinental Champion, (Ahmed Johnson) the so-called "World's Strongest Man" (Mark Henry) and arguably the biggest superstar at the time in The Brahma Bull. (The Rock)

While it's great and all that the WWE has a World Heavyweight Champion who is black in Booker T, it appears McMahon is resorting back to his old ways.

Making their debut on WWE Raw next week is a tag-team by the name of Cryme Tyme. Cryme Tyme's gimmick is a so called parody of "stereotypical black street thugs." Whatever that means.

In such a monopolized industry like professional wrestling, with one man holding all the chips, you wonder how many people will actually stand up and challenge McMahon on a gimmick that would pose them in a negative light.

My guess is not many because there would be no Cryme Tyme if that were the case.

Either way, it appears black wrestlers are back to shucking and jiving for Vinnie Mac.

And that means I'm back to explaining to my little that everything on TV is not always real as it seems...

I don't watch it as much it just gets more confusing to me I use to watch it alot back in the early eightys  but to much stuff to keep up with now, it's more a strip show now than anything, and it is teaching kids more ways to get themselves in trouble,or more ways to hurt one another

I have watched WWE since it was WWF!  I have always known that it was fake.  But I have come to understand that this fake form of entertainment was created for white people.  They have something that they can call their own; have their own champion, etc.  My people (African-American) have taken over the REAL sports, anyway!  If McMahan wants to politic his show towards his people, then so be it.  If my people want to be involved and become stereotyped, then it is what it is. At the same time, if my people find this insulting, then the answer is simple. Just don't watch the show.  But for real, riding the whole race card thing is old and tired.  In other words,... in the film "Do The Right Thing", if Sal didn't want anyone but his people's photo's on the wall, it was no one's business but his own.  This is one REAL ASS N**** saying to my peoples... STOP BITC**** about everything! Everything ain't always gotta be taken so much to heart. Damn!

I THINK THE MCMAHONS THINK THAT THE MAJORITY OF THEIR VIEWERS ARE PREDOMINANTLY PEOPLE THAT ARE NOT OF COLOR  OR IF THEY KNOW THEY DONT CARE . THE WRESTLERS  OF COLOR ARE JUST DOING THE "MAN" ANOTHER SLAVE TRADE . IF THEYRE MAKING GOOD MONEY WITHOUT BEING SOME VICTIMS OF DRUGS . WHO AM I TO JUDGE. AT LEAST THEYRE SLAVES ARE GETTING PAID AND MOST LIKELY GETTING LAID. SO SHOULD THEY ANSWER TO YES MASSA OR FIND A GOOD GOD FEARING PASTOR. I WISH THEM ALL THE BEST BCUZ WHEN IT COMES TO MONEY THERE IS NO COLOR BUT GREEN!

As a life long wrestling fan I must say Cryme time ranks as one of hte worst gimmicks ever that i have seen in a while but why do we watch it week end and week out and Raw is one of  the  highest rated shows on cable. Vince will be Vince and always pander to the lowest common factor. The people mention Koko B Ware Slick and Vigil. It was done cause we the fans watched it as we do now. Vince will do anything to make a buck who can remember One Man Gang being Akeem and being managed by Slick. We watch wrestling cause most times it's good entertainment. But Vince isn't the only game in town just the biggest. Remember after 9/11 he would never exploit that only to give us Mohammad Hassan ands ruin a man's career by showing him using hooded figured to attack The Undertaker after London was bombed. instead of pulling the program for the week knowing it was taped tuesday and shown on Thursday
