Feeling Mischievous
Amazon and water studies...
Better keep yourself clean and bright; you are the window through which you must see the world.
- George Bernard Shaw
I would really like to take the girls to see this movie at the Omnimax in June. It will fit in nicely with our summer curriculum of studying water ecology and aquatic life. The Amazon is such an interesting river, and then we can pair it with visiting Jungle Trails at the Cincinnati Zoo. I am always so pleased at the synchronicity of resources appearing to fall into our lives when ever we chose a subject to study in depth. What is so satisfying about homeschooling unit studies is that the whole family is engaged in learning--all at our different levels of comprehension. Although my husband's undergraduate area of expertise in Biology was Ichthyology (the study of fish) I know he will learn a great deal as we 'immerse' ourselves in the subject. Anyone local who wants to join us is welcome--and anyone who wants to join us long distance is welcome, also! If you live near a lake or river, we could arrange a package exchange. Your family will collect shells, press plants, send a small sample of water and soil, and we can do the same. How different would the Rio Grande be from the Licking River in Kentucky? Chance, can we talk you into sending us some water off the side of your new boat? Maybe we can also get Albert to send us some of his San Francisco water or sand.
Rachael, would you and Weesie want to come with us? I know nature is not your overwhelming interest. (A comment here would be appropriate: "Yes, Kas, I would so dearly love to accompany your wonderful family on an excursion to see the Amazon or, No thank you, I must regretfully decline this particular invitation.") Uncle Dave is always welcome as it goes without saying.
Tomorrow we will be heading down to our small nature preserve The Big Toe on the Licking River for a family cookout. The Perfect Uncle Dave will be joining us, as well as my dh's family. There is a sixty percent chance of rain, but...we have only been down there once when it didn't rain so far. I will be intrigued to see how many cicadas there are in the forest. None had emerged yet when we were down there two weeks ago.
"Friday Classic Films at the Omnimax"
June's Friday Classic Film, Amazon (1997), takesviewers on a journey from the source of the Amazon River in the high Andes through the rain forest, and into the majestic Amazon basin.
Follow two "medicine men" in their quest for understanding the medicinal properties of the rain forest plants.
You can pair the Friday Classic Film with the current OMNIMAX feature for a special discount. Amazon will play at 8 p.m. each Friday during the month of June."

*ahem* Yes, Kas, I would so dearly love to accompany your wonderful family on an excursion to see the Amazon. :-) When/what time/etc? And--I *do* like nature. I just usually prefer to admire it from afar. :-)

currently reading this as you commented on my RemoRoast... I'd be glad to send you a Pacific ocean sample, if you give me a clue how to pack it, seems like it'd be complicated/costly? Sand/shells of course would be easy! --Albert
