Feeling Happy

Altered Book Club tomorrow

September  21  1:00- 3:00
at Eastgate Hobby Lobby
Altered Book club/class - First meeting

If your family are interested in participating in this monthly activity or want to find out more please come
for a discussion on altered books and to learn more about this activity we will be doing each month.  There will be  a sample of an altered book.  If you already have your book please bring it along. If you don't have one yet that is ok too.  We will talk about determining a theme, deciding on materials to use,  dates and times for future meetings.

Do you have a fear of altering a book because it has been ingrained in you as something bad to do?   Don't worry I still have that in me as well.  An unwanted book is a wonderful medium to use for art.  Just think of books that may be on their way to the landfills, look for those finds at yardsales or library sales.

Come join us and see what this art craze is all about!

Click here: Creative Art Space for Kids, Inc.: Children's art classes and exhibitions, Long Island, New York   has some great examples of children's altered books....

I am not sure what theme I will use, but I believe it will be about either miscarriage and loss, with my poems inserted in among pictures (depressing) or about horses (happy.)  I might make a mystical one, as well.

Is there anyone out there already doing this that can share some pointers?

I've been altering books for several years now, so I'm definitely hooked.  If you want to get some more ideas for altering books, please visit my web site at
http://karenswhimsy.com/altered-books/ .  I have lots of pictures, with descriptions of how I created the books.  You might find some ideas that will help you.

I sent you an email reply from the boards.  I also do altered books, don't be afraid to be creative.  Getting old books or discounted books from a yard sale, or book fair is one way to go.  Children's board books are good to alter because they hold up well to paint and embellishments.  I have a Deco Book on my journal if you and your girls are interested in seeing mine and some fellow journalers contributions to it.  There are tons of links if you put in "altered books" in a search engine, but I have some on my sidebar.  Lisa Vollrath is one.  I think you will love it, I know I do!
    Love, Penny

Hmm, fear of mutilating a book?  Nah!  I've dissected too many of them to make nifty safeholds, glued them together as plant stands and even let my favorite goat eat the cover off one.  Probably doesn't qualify as art, but there ya go.  ¤H
