Sad ending...and a new beginning for a skunk

The caretakers of the Koomer Ridge campground called me a few minutes ago.  They were finally able to trap the poor bird-shot dog in a live trap using a two pound roast laced with tranquilizers as bait.  However, when they got him to the vet his injuries were too infected and his condition too poor. The vet said they should euthanize him, so they did.  I reassured the sweet woman that she did all she could to save the poor animal. Rescuing any animals that are very sick is often heartbreaking--just this year alone we have lost a newborn kitten Pyewacket, a newborn gerbil PinkieBoo, two pigeons Ladybird and Peegie that had been hit by a car, a starling that was injured, and a bat.  Of course, we have helped many animals, too. Everytime I see a bat flying free I think of Zachary and wish him well. I also am happy that Giner, the blue kitten we found in the McDonald's dumpster, and the calico kitten found their way into forever homes, and the gerbils we have found homes for are thriving. The Fool, the albino gerbil male that had been attacked and traumatized by a cat before being brought to a local pet store--they gave him to us for free--is now fat and allows Mandy to handle him.

The important thing is that Magoo is no longer lost and suffering terrible agony from gangrene. He died peacefully with a belly full of rump roast. The girls are over at The Old House, cleaning and painting. They will cry when I tell them.

The circle of life is harsh.

Today we added a new pet to our menagerie--a skunk!  Her owners went off to college in Montana (and the airlines refused to let the skunk fly in her carrier). She is descented, very fat, and very sweet. She uses a litter box (most of the time) and eats dog food. Her name is Lily. I am already calling her Miss Lillian, after President Carter's mother, whom I adored. My husband was enchanted enough by her that he did not object to her arrival.  Her coat is very shiny and she looks like a stuffed animal. She has a smell, but not like a skunk musk. She is very cute and likes to bury her nose in your armpit.  The girls took her into the library when we stopped in and were instant celebrities. :-)

They are buying her a harness so she can go for walks.

I am so sorry to hear about the dog.... he tugged at my heart all day yesterday. There is a special place in hell for the people who would harm children and animals. Oh. I am glad he no longer suffers. We had a neighbor in Pittsburgh who took care of a rescued skunk, and that skunk was the most adorable creature. Your skunk has found a wonderful home with you! love to you all today! judi

Ya it is always sad to lose animals, but helping them really touches the soul.  Your new little skunk friend sounds really cute...I have never meet anyone that had one before.

I didn't feel bad for luring him into the cage...gangrene is a horrible, very painful death, and it was just a matter of dasy since it was in his eyes...the distance from the optic nerve to the brain is short...poor baby.
