Feeling Mischievous
book review: Why Paint cats

I am occasionally astonished by the synchronicity that operates in my life. On Saint Patrick's Day my daughter's painted our Greyhound for the first time, using Jello (a harmless fruit colored dye). Delilah loved it, obligingly rolling over and allowing them to embellish her with Celtic designs. She also likes having her toenails painted.

I believe the reason she likes being painted is that the wet brush probably feels like a tongue licking her. She also loves the focused attention....I had my doubts at first about whether it was quite ethical, but since she so obviously enjoyed herself (and the extra attention she received that day for being green) it seems harmless enough.

So, I was spellbound by this book when we went to Barnes and Noble's later in the day. It was just laying out, obviously discarded by someone who was looking at it.

The girls and I "ohhed and ahhed" over the kitties who were painted. I then went to the website and read where some people were very upset over the idea of painting cats. I believe it is up to the individual cat and the individual person. Obviously, you would not paint an uncooperative cat. I cannot even begin to try to imagine painting our Mama Green Eyes. She would eviscerate me.
Just as obviously, non-toxic dyes must be used.
The first time Delilah was artificially colored she did it to herself. The girls and I spent several hours making elaborate and beautiful ladybug cupcakes for my niece Bentley's baby shower. The theme of the shower we sponsored for her adoption was Ladybugs, and we went all out.
Then we went upstairs to get dressed. Although the cupcakes were up quite high on the sideboard, they were gone. Not a crumb remained.
Our white Greyhound, however, was quite red all over her face and chest. She blinked at us, trying to look innocent, but...we knew. She was caught red mouthed.

The cover cat looks pretty cool with the butterfly of blue. LOL

I also thought that if perhaps I could paint some of the stray kittens we are beseiged with every spring--the urban stray cat situation is overwhelming--that I might be able to place more of them in homes. Last year we found homes for six----and we neutered all of them before giving them away (an expensive situation).

My old cat lucky used to let my daughter dress him up in doll clothes. I think animals are like we humans we love to be decorated and adorned and please pay attention to us! Your cupcakes story reminded me of my dog trooper...my mother would always bake caramel cakes for the kids...one day I found the cake half eaten in a rather messy way...it was of course the dog! Cool book! ~rose
