Feeling Happy

Shelby Lynn: the shameful secret:  she was named after a car!!

New York Auto show  What name we would select for the baby was a very hot topic when I was pregnant with Shelby Lynn.  Not only did we have to find a name that my husband and I would agree on, the older girls had to put their two cents in---and the name had to be one that had not been selected for any of my previous thirteen pregnancies.  (I name each baby that I have lost).

I was pushing hard for a few other names, but everyone liked Shelby for a girl.

We had been watching the incredible Ken Burns " The Civil War" series, and historian Shelby Foote was narrating much of it.  He is a very distinguished Southern Man, with a lovely drawl.  Shelby is a name that is more commonly used for girls nowadays.  We selected Liam for a boy.

One night, before I was supposed to learn what sex the baby was, my husband came home with a charm from a charm bracelet.  He tucked it into a bouquet of flowers.  I was still on bedrest--seven long months of it--and the flowers were a particularly welcome gift.  The charm said "Shelby."  Well, what could I do but name her Shelby, then?

We normally do not want to learn the sex of the baby when we  are pregnant.  But it was very apparent that David's father was going to die before the baby was born, and we wanted to tell him what his new grandbaby would be.  I had two ultrasounds a week (!!) and had always told them not to tell me what sex the baby was. When I learned it was a little girl, we bought a pretty frame that said" It's a girl" on it and put Shelby's picture from that week in the frame.

My husband started buying model cars of the Shelby mustang line. She had several before she was even born.  ROFL

It is so funny to find out that I am not the only one... I too secretly named my daughter after the car... I have only had one person ask me about it, and I just chuckled to myself... LOL My Shelby was just born June 15th 2005.
