Feeling Happy
An injured snake arrives at the Hestia Homeschool and Animal Refuge
Some neighborhood children found an injured garter snake down by the stadium. It has a chunk taken out of its side, however, it is moving around now that it is warming up.
Shelby, who ADORES snakes, keeps holding it very gently and squealing "Snake! Snake! Snake!"
Fortunately, garters will eat crickets and other critters like that. I could not bring myself to feed it mammals.
I will try to find a snake rehabber.
(I do have the girls wash their hands and use skin sanitizer after handling them.)
I did find a wonderful woman an hour and a half or so away to take the baby coons. She says that since the state changed its licensing requirements there are only two rehabbers in the whole Bluegrass region. No wonder I am getting swamped.
I finally found a vet to call in a prescription of amoxycillin for the baby coon. She seems weaker and is breathing badly. I want a rehabber who can intubate, so I am taking the baby coons down there in a little bit, after I make sure my husband is awake. My regular vet, The Splendid Dr. Ballack, is wonderful, but he is on vacation. The last time he was here he called me Dr. Doolittle, which I felt was a high compliment. Dr. Angel, in Florence, offered to see the baby Cadpig in the morning, but I want her intubated and getting subcut fluids now. I am afraid to wait.
I will donate some money with the coons---they are expensive to rehab. Pray for them....I am taking a amoxycillin prescription and some formula, too.
I am going to try to get some more training in intubating newborn baby critters and subcut injections. I am sure these are not the last wee ones who will find their way to my home!
