Feeling Mischievous

Vulva of the Day:  Sheila-na-gig

Well, now, it's been some time since I've featured the ever-so-popular Vulva of the Day entry in my blog.

I was looking for some Celtic Knotwork for a scrapbook when I came upon this charming Irish Sheila-na-gig, who appeared over Church doorways and other special places in Ireland.  She is proudly displaying her vulva.

Click here: Sheila-Na-Gig  harkens back to a time when Celts recognized the Doorway of Life as something sacred.

I wonder what the reaction of Clan Desdin (our Scottish reenactment group) would be if I showed up with a Shelila-na-Gig to put over the doorway of our tent?  We reenact the 1760's.  Sheila-na-gigs were particularly common in the sixteenth century. It would therefore be quite historically accurate.  Somehow I think they would not want us to be THAT accurate.

ROFL

"What makes these figures especially interesting is the fact that most of them were found embedded (and some still are) in the walls of early monasteries and village churches, and we can imagine that they have given more than one abbot or priest his share of devilish headache. Nevertheless, most of these sheelas have meanwhilebeen dismantled -many first disfigured and damaged by soldiers and other good Christians --are hidden away in a cellar of the Dublin Museum"

    from the website...
