Feeling Chillin'

Suppositories and rectal thermomenters are not sexual abuse

Did you hear about the wife who spent all day with her four young children and just couldn't wait for her husband to get home from work?  As soon as he stepped over the threshold, she begged him to please take her out alone to some expensive place.   So they went to the gas station to fill up

Since AOL would not let me access either my email or my journal/blog last night, I fell for one of its welcome screens and ventured over into the AOL parenting chat boards. The Hot Topic was "To Spank or Not to Spank".  Of course, it was full of die hards on both sides of the equation....but what really astonished me was one vociferous thread that had some people declaring that rectal thermometers and suppositories are sexual abuse!!

I did post that even adults use rectal suppositories if they are vomiting and can't keep anything down their stomachs.  (More information than you want to know--I know this from personal experience following head injuries.) It may be unpleasant, but they are medically necessary!  Rectal thermometers are the most accurate way to take a baby's temperature. I worked for Hamilton County in the Children's Protective Unit...I've seen real sexual abuse first hand.  It is NOT using suppositories and rectal thermometers on babies!   My GOODNESS GRACIOUS ME!  It is a shame that people are taking a good thing (awareness of sexual abuse) and carrying it to ridiculous extremes.  It actually waters down the impact/seriousness of real abusive behavior.  Ditto for spanking--a swat on the butt is different from leaving bruises and welts and physical injuries.  I've seen beatings that would make you want to vomit.  Swatting a fully clothed bottom is not abusive. It might not be effective, it might be poor judgement or demonstrate a lack of parenting skills, but it is not abuse.

EVERY SINGLE DAY (sorry I am shouting I'll stop), I see spoiled teenagers who have little or no repect for anyone because their parents couldn't be bothered with teaching them right from wrong.  I can always tell the kids who have parents that actually practice being parents, because they actually listen to me when I ask them to stop doing something wrong with out arguing with me.  My husbands' ex wife babysits my 2 beautiful grandsons.  She did a horrible job with the 2 younger sons she raised and now she is repeating her duty with these two.  The 22 month old who is the eldest...already throws things at people, doesn't listen and called my youngest son an asshole, and I am sure this idiot thought it was funny.  It's all  I can do to not speak up.  But my husband does and hopefully my d-i-l will stay home and raise her own kids.  They can do without the swimming pool and other junk.  Her children are what matter Thanks for bringing up this subject.  you touched a nerve.  rose~

A rectal thermometer is commonly used in emergency rooms!  As far as suppositories go I have to use them on Austin because he gets constipated and he needs to go.  So,basically I'm molesting my godson?  CUT ME A BREAK!  Obviously these people are insane!!  As far as spaking goes I did spank Austin.  I spanked him until one day when I went to tap him bum, with a diaper on,and I missed and caught the side of his leg.  For a week every single time he was running around in a diaper and I looked at the back of his leg I saw the welp my fingers left.  I must admit my mom did worse to me and I tell myself that I do not want Austin to be scared of me.  While some spanking is effective some is not.  I think some parents do take it too far.  -Dawn-

AOL cut the end off my comment, read the long comment under this one.  This is the end:

". . . .  suppositories and thermometers?  Focus on what really matters.  This kind of crap turns prevention of child abuse into a bad joke!!!"

Focus on the right kinds of things and save some lives!!!

Years ago, the preschool-aged daughter of a friend was molested by the nanny's husband.  You know, you just can't imagine the time and effort that is put into the gradual molestation of a little child by someone close to the family, someone who probably does this with each family the nanny (his wife) works for.  These people are PREDATORS!!!  They have a method . . .     gaining the trust . . .

"this is okay when you do it with ME because I love you" . . . (think about how effective that would be with a three-year-old little girl!)

(he went beyond gaining trust -- he made the child LOVE him, then she never wanted to hurt this person in any way!)  . . . . . . making a beautiful little innocent child sexual (remember, it feels GOOD) . . .  gradually.   the parents think a little touchy feely is normal, but they become concerned . . . question the child . . .OF COURSE SHE TELLS THEM THAT EVERYTHING IS GREAT.

The nanny's background check was impecable.  She's been a nanny for a half-dozen families and they ALL give glowing recommendations.  She worked for them a couple of years before the couple was allowed to care for the children together, on weekends.  Evidentally, the things Mommy said were conflicted with what he'd said . . .   and it was bothering the child, or what he was doing was starting to hurt . . .  she suddenly didn't want Mommy and Daddy to go away for the weekend and leave them with Nanny and husband . . .   then, the night before their departure, the question, that same question she heard every couple of months,  "has ANYONE, besides Mommy, Daddy, or Nanny  . . . "       "yes"

This child was in therapy for years.  The intenisty of the child's sexuality . . .  well, you can't un-ring a bell. . . .   it was heartbreaking.

My goodness...sexual abuse when using a rectal thermometer or suppositories?  Geez...they're probably those types who've only used the kind that you stick in your ear!  Lisa
