Feeling Happy

Fishing down on the Licking River at Big Toe

Last week we drove back down to Big Toe.  This time of year, we seem to go down at least once a week when David is off work.  The progression of change in season is very apparent when you visit like this.

Dave loves to fish. His undergraduate specialty was Ichthyology. He does not want to eat the fish--he is too squeamish and soft hearted to kill them--he just likes to catch and look at them.  This time he caught a lovely four pound Channel Catfish.  The girls were fascinated by the size, since we have a tiny three inch Channel catfish in our aquarium.

It seems odd to me that such a vociferous animal rights activist as Tabitha would also love to fish. I think she loves the time she spends with her daddy even more, especially since they do not kill the fish.  She also tells me very seriously that she needs to know how to catch food in case she ever becomes a Super Spy.  Survival skills are paramount in her chosen secret profession.

If we had a bigger place, I would think about adopting a greyhoud :)  I never realized how beautiful they are.  We went to a local shelter today to possibly get us a med sized dog to adopt, but we were sadly dissappointed.  Not happy with the shelter at all.

I have a question for you about Grassy Run coming up Fri.  Can you send me an email when you get a chance?  We'd like to come out (if it's not raining), but I'm not familiar with the times and dates and location.  I emailed someone about attending the school day on 4/29, but this person said that the registration is closed.  My email is natisha1971@aol.com   Thanks :)

My inlaws use to live on the Licking River. This tree makes a wonderfully serene setting.

This is the purple varient of Larkspur....we have an almost white variety that grows, too, intermingled.  I guess unless you use the Latin name, it is never completely accurate. :-)  I know that yarrow (boneset) has several varieties that mountain people all Boneset...

Is Larkspur a local name donw your way for Virginia Cowslip? We did a wildflower walk with the Harford Co. Ornithological Soc. last week and a flower that looks just like this was ID'd as Va. Cowslip, Mertensia virginica. Larkspurs have "palmate leaves" like that herb we all knew quite well in our college days!!
