Feeling Mischievous

This time last year:  The "Mom Voice"

A few nights ago the kiddos and I headed down to Blockbuster to return a few DVDs.  While I was waiting in line the young man who was waiting on people kept rubbing and digging at his eye.  I looked at it closely (being a mom) and saw that he didn't have Pinkeye, so he had probably scratched his cornea.  He kept telling the other kid working with him that he had something in his eye.  When it got to be my turn, he was digging at his eye and I reached out and grabbed his hand and said in a mom voice, "Stop that. You'll just make it worse."  Of course, he stopped (everybody obeys mom voices) and he obediently came out behind the counter to let me see it.  He had an eyelash stuck in his eye. I had him lick my finger and then I got it out. Then I sent Tabby to the car and left him with some over the counter eye drops to put in it when he felt like rubbing it. I told him he could go to the hospital to have a scratched cornea looked at but they wouldn't do much. (Having been to the hospital with three scratched corneas--mine, David, and Tabitha) I know this.

I thought about it later and chuckled.  The "Mom" voice is somewhat like the Voice in Dune.  It works on almost everybody--all of us want someone to nurture us and take a bit of control when we are in pain. LOL

This entry is from almost a year ago, back when no one ever read my journal. It does strike me how much my life stays about the same.  The only notable difference now is Shelby is talking so much!

I know about the "Mom Voice," with 3 kids of my own and all of there friends that have been through the house over the years the Mom Voice was of utmost importance. I've also used it big time over the years at work as a recruiter/trainer and supervisor of at least 120 telemarketers at a time, without the "Mom Voice" I would have never been able to make it through the day for all of those years. Any idea how much nurturing a group of 120 telemarketers needs?
Now my youngest has moved away from home, the other two live 1000 miles away, the marketing strategy at our company has changed drastically, we have gone from 120 phone reps to 15 or 20 ... I don't get the opportunity to use my Mom voice near as much as I use to. I miss that, she said all misty eyed.

Licking your finger!  Now that's a novel idea!  Those "mom voices" are really needed in this day and age.  Like the ol' "It takes a village to raise a child" view.  Lisa

I think we as mother's have the duty to mother the world's children no matter how old.  It's cute at my work there's a older gentlemen who has trouble getting his coat on you'll see 2 different mom's helping him!  That's what God made us to do ... MOTHER!  thanks for being a good mom.  rose

Ah ha!  There must be a scientific principle behind the phenomenon!  I have noticed that the word WALK! spoken in the "school crossing guard" voice works well on youngsters (and some not so youngsters) running in the mall.

Just took the time to find your journal!  Wonderful!
