Feeling Quiet

Rolling on the river:  Mandy's first job interview

Mandy went for her first job interview today. I drove her down to the B and B Riverboats to be interviewed for a job as a photographer on the riverboat cruises.  I felt a bit sad to think of her being gone so much if she gets a job. I like to keep my chicks close to the henhouse.  She is seventeen, though, and she is ready for a bit more spending money than she gets.

The night before I had her remove her black fingernail polish. We checked out several combinations of her clothes before deciding on a preppy shirt and pants combination. We practiced questions and answers.  Even if she doesn't get this job, it was a valuable experience for her. She was so young looking next to all the other people they were interviewing.

I hid around the corner of the building so they would not think she had her momma with her, but not so far away that she couldn't come to me if she had questions filling out the application.  I was very proud of her.

Sitting down on a riverboat for a few hours while she was going through this whole process made me realize again how much I love the Ohio River.  I can't imagine living away from water at this point in my life.  The water was brown with dirt as it always is in the spring, swirling around the dock.  I thought about how the Ohio used to dry up in the summer and people could wade across it.  I wonder what the native people would think of it now, dredged so deep?

We live so close to the river now that I can hear the moaning of the barges at night.  I also wondered at the river boats. All were painted red and white. Is that a tradition with all riverboats, or just the local ones?

I hope she gets the job! How fun! I love taking pictures...and to do it for a living is a dream job of mine. :-)  My first job was bagging groceries...not very glamorus but I made really good money for a kid my age at the time.

Hope your Mandy gets the job. My Mandy is 18 now and 3 months ago started a job in a law office, she loves the job and is loved back there big time. She has been working since she was 15 (4 different jobs) and I have been on every single job interview with her, I never thought about waiting around the corner. LOL
I remember her job interview with Cold Stone Ice Cream was held at the Unemployment Office, it was a group audition actually. The owners asked me to stay we all sat around in a huge circle and they asked the kids to sing, dance, make loud strange noises and make up skits. I helped to break the ice for them by making Chicken Sounds and a really loud Monkey Noise, I'll bet Mandy never forgets that interview.
Good to your young wild woman.
