Feeling Worried
homophobic "Brother" teaching hate at Church
"So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God. Therefore, let us stop passing judgment on one another."
Romans 14:12,13 (NIV)
Both of my daughters came home from the Baptist church on Sunday upset and outraged. Brother Rich, the head pastor, told a young teen, Chelsea, that her mother would be going straight to hell because she is a lesbian.
Tabitha told him that she is as God made her. He told her that the woman chooses to live in sin and chooses her lifestyle.
It makes me wonder if he has ever talked to a homosexual person who knew they were homosexual before they even really understood what sexual orientation is.
Chelsea has been told that they were not welcome at another Baptist church in town.
This sickens me.
Mandy left the sermon. Later she told the pastor if that is what being a Christian is, that she will never be a Christian.
I am a Quaker. We have been around since the 1600s, and we are famous for being tolerant, gentle people. I am going to have to make some effort to find a Meeting to take them to occasionally. There are no Friends Meetings in town.

I am a Quaker, an old and well respected religion that has been around since the 1600's. We started the abolitionist movement to free slaves, and also the women's suffrage movement. We won the Nobel Prize as a group for helping concentration camp victims and other victims of Nazi cruelty during World War II. Many famous Americans, including George Washington and Ben Franklin, attended Quaker Meetings.
That we choose to not judge homosexuals harshly for their lifestyle does not mean that we are not Christians, it just means that we feel that God is Love, and the Light of God lives within all of us. Jesus condemned divorce, and yet many Baptists and other Christians who are so quick to point the finger at homosexuals are divorced. Cast not the first stone.
I am proud of my children for standing up for what they believe in. -
To the person who asked, "have you read your Bibles lately?" Yes, I have, and I'm familiar with the "clobber passages" that you quote. I'm also familiar with the rest of the Bible. Like Acts 15, which teaches us how to be inclusive and how to compromise. Or how about the story of David and Jonathon, who were most assuredly homosexual, but were not condemned for it by God. How about the fact that the story about Sodom and Gemorrah is about not welcoming strangers....that was the real sin of the Sodomites. The fact that the Christian right uses that story in order to not welcome a certain group of people is beyond irony.

" we are known for being tolerant, gentle people."
There is a big difference in " loving and tolerating" Jesus said I Love You but go and sin no more. Tolerating is not 'christian' never has been and never should be!
Did you guys read your Bibles lately? Leviticus and Romans 1?
You might access:
Confusing Tolerance and Love from Focus on the Family's Yourth Culture and
The Truth About Tolerance by J. Budziszewski very informative and educational for your daughters! And you homeschoolers!
Very noble of them to stand up to a 'preacher' but for wrong reasons. Let them stand for right reasons! -
My mother and most of her family are foot-washing Southern Baptists. I am very aware of what they believe. Brother Rich is pretty representative of their current beliefs. I still let the girls go there because they love the youth group. I just hate that they are teaching the kids intolerance.
