Feeling Chillin'

Kentucky Caverns

Kentucky Caverns / Kentucky Down Under270-786-2634

Visitors to Kentucky Caverns are surprised and delighted by the density and variety of formations and the extensive range of natural color to be found in the cave. A stroll through Kentucky Caverns is truly a visit to a natural wonderland. Visitors are also amazed to learn that both the formations themselves and their palette of colors are part of the important story of the many ways in which the surface and subsurface are connected.

During the spring, summer and fall of the year, Kentucky Caverns can be seen as part of the combined activities of Kentucky Down Under and Kentucky Caverns. Visitors take a journey that explores life in the great outback of Australia and the three dimensional world of caves. Together these two attractions provide an interactive, family-oriented experience which helps visitors better understand the relationships of the natural world and the impact man can have on those relationships.

We really enjoyed our tour of this small cave in Horse Cave, Kentucky, located inside Kentucky Down Under. Our young guide was so enthusiastic and informed, we made sure to give her a tip in view of the other people on the trip, hoping they would do the same. They didn't, but maybe they'll learn. :-)

Her name was Courtney, and she very enthusiastically told us all about the wildlife that is in the cave. We, of  course, regaled her with bat rehabilitation stories, and left our phone number and address in case she ever finds a bat in need. There were several salamanders, a (dead) blind crawdad, and some cave crickets.  She explained how early visitors from last century poisoned the undergound water by throwing coins in.  They recently dredged the pool and now wildlife is returning to the cave. She also was careful to point out how touching the formations blackens them and keeps them from growing.

My children were left with enthusiasm for cave fauna, and I am now looking for local caving/spelunkers clubs for them. Kentucky is cave country, and there are wild caves all over the place.

This one, though, is particularly lovely. I inhaled with delight every few moments...

The problem is these little suckers move more like spiders until they jump AT you and then they startle the living daylights outta me. Don't tell my exhibit at the Zoo or they'll fire me:):):) judi

I think cave crickets are the same as camel crickets.  We have them around here... they come out in the evening.  We had one in the bathroom recently and it made Judi scream like a girl . . . . !  LOL
    Peace,  Virginia

I am quite claustrophobic, but made myself do several caves, and was so glad I did. These pictures are great. Margo
