Feeling Happy
embracing diversity
I think some people feel baffled as to why I post prayers from so many faiths on my blog. It is part of my diversity training for my children---I want them to see the similarities in the things people from all faiths, skin colors and countries pray for. God is not solely for one faith, but belongs to the whole universe.
I think about this a great deal, particularly right now when Islam is so vilified. I was so grateful when, amid the horrors of September 11, I could tell my children that one of the finest men I know is Moslem. I told them, "Mehter sensei is a devout Moslem" and they immediately realized that the terrorists were no more representative of all of Islam than the man who blew up the Oklahoma City Building was representative of Christianity.
A few years later we met Con, who was a Moslem Turkish student--and later we met his family. A more loving, charming young man could hardly be imagined.

Since I've started reading your journal I've always enjoyed the different prayers you post. What I find interesting about them is the uniqueness in the words but the similarity of their meanings.
I can honestly say that I wouldn't think of using prayers to teach diversity -- but that's only because I never thought of it! Great idea and great method. -
I just figured you enjoyed looking up unique prayers. Good to know. I need to think about that for my girls. We have just come out of the Church of Christ (where most within believe they are the only ones with an "in" to heaven). I am really enjoying our new church. We pray each week for a different body of believers in the community. Wonderful to see that we are all members of the body, not just a select few.

I think you are doing your children a great service by showing them all religions. I believe that is very important. My parents tried to do the same thing with me, but mainly they let me go my own spiritual path, and I am ever the better for it I believe. :)

I've always found your variety of postings to be interesting and often inspiring. Whatever someone's faith or belief, I think it's always a good thing to learn about others, the way we live, etc. We all have much to share and learn from each other.
