Panning for gemstones in Colorado

While we were visiting Pike's Peak the girls wheedled their father into letting them pan for gemstones.

They had a very good time--and so did he--enough so that he ended up paying for a few more extra bags of stuff to pan.
We had planned on visiting Cripple Creek to pan for gold while we were there, but never managed to make it there, so beguiled were we by the multitude of very interesting things close by. As it was, each girl came home with a respectable little bag full of tiny gemstones to treasure as a happy memento.
Our family does like rocks, minerals and fossils a great deal. We are planning on rejoining Dry Dredgers, a local fossil club sponsored by the University of Cincinnati, and the Gem and Mineral Society. Both of them sponsor fun fieldtrips.
Now if I can only find room to store yet another collection.

Tyler would love doing something like this. He love to dip his hands into water to play and he loves rocks. So...perfect! LOL

Do they "stock" the creek or are they really finding native gemstones? My girls would love that. I really want to go to Colorado now that I have seen your vacation.
