Feeling Frustrated
my anti-war rant for the day (warning:graphic)
| When a war breaks out, people say: "It's too stupid, it can't last long." But though a war may be "too stupid," that doesn't prevent its lasting. |
| – Albert Camus |

The war situation in the world right now is absolutely devastating. I think it should be apparent to anyone with an ounce of sense that violence begets violence.

In an ideal world, leaders would be like good moms who would rule the world by playground rules: No hitting. No throwing sand. No peeing in the swimming pool. Put children in time out rather than hitting them. No letting someone take something away from someone else just because they are bigger and stronger than the other person. Share your toys. It is easier to be friends than enemies. Just shut up and get along with them. All children are our mutual responsibility (no mom would stand by and watch another's infant play in a street and get run over.)

The Abu Ghraib Prison Photos - by News shows what our country has done in the name of Freedom and Justice for all. The Iraqi people don't hate us because we are free, they hate us because we are doing things like this. We are the strongest and I believe devoutly the best country in the world. We need to be above all of this kind of behavior. The vast majority of the American soldiers over there are not monsters, they are good, decent people. But if America is going to retain the moral high ground, we need to be above reproach. We need to remember that the majority of the terrorists of 9/11 were Saudi Arabians...and not Afghans, and not Iraqi.

Please pray for Dornbrau's son Gabe, who is in Iraq and who is the perfect representation of what a good American young man should be--honest, brave, and serving his country. We need to make sure our country is serving him, and that the 2549 Americans who have died in this war did not die in vain.

And, yes, Tabby and Mandy will see these photos. I want them to be under no illusion just how ugly torture is, and just how easy it is to abuse power. I am much less worried about the fact that they will see a bare penis in a photo. The true obscenity is the torture.

To say it's shameful doesn't express the magnitude of the horrendous nature of war and what people are capable of. It turns my stomach. You have the same thoughts as I do. We try to teach our kids these values, but as adults, we want to go "punch" the other one in the face instead of talking things out.

Alas, I agree with all you say. It is scary. And what is the civilian death count? We will never know. Margo

Not all soldiers who torture go off the deep end and turn on their prisoners. Frankly, unlimited power is pretty exhilerating. Still, I don't hold the soldiers as responsible as I do their commanding officers, and the nation that teaches the commanding officers that they do not need to obey the Geneva Conventions as long as we are the ones doing the torturing.
My daughters were very saddened by this. Tabby said indignantly that even terrorists should not be treated like that.
They are the children of God as much as we are. -
I think soldiers do things like that because they frankly go off the deep end emotionally and don't know how to deal with it all, not that it excuses their behavior, but unfortunately war is never pretty.
