Tom's fiftieth birthday party

Friendship is always a sweet responsibility, never an opportunity.

-Kahlil Gibran

One of the finest things in life are old friends---the Donnellys have been part of our lives for over twenty five years. Sharlotte was my anthropology advisor and a dear mentor through my turbulent college years. There were years that the only Christmas present I got was from Sharlotte.  Once she singlehandedly got me a scholarship within two days when I was unable to round up enough money to attend college one year.  Sharlotte and Tom hosted our wedding shower. She hosted the baby shower when we adopted Mandy--over two months after she arrived home--no one in either side of our family stepped forward to do it, so Tom and Sharlotte had a wonderful "toddler" shower for us.  Sharlotte was in my wedding. I was at the hospital the night Bridgette was born--and I was the (non-Catholic) woman standing at the alter at her Christening.  Over the years we have seen each other through a lot of rough spots. I nominated Sharlotte for the Outstanding Professor award and the Greatest influence awards at NKU--both of which she received. :-) Sharlotte was the first person to ever encourage my writing.  Tom is an attorney who handled the law suit for us when the van door fell off its hinges on top of me and got us a $60, 000 settlement (we got to keep thirty thousand--that is where the hot tub, the deck,  the van and the wooden privacy fence came from) and he advised us when Mandy was molested by my so-called friend.I often use him for a sounding board for situations where I need legal advice or just common sense--like when my brother in law Bruce wanted to call Children's Services on us when Tabby was still breastfeeding at four years old.  I know I can count on them to be there should I ever need them, any hour, day or night. Just last week Bridgette showed up with a whole lot of baby stuff for an unmarried Appalachian teen I know who was considering a second trimester abortion.

Theyare Good People, and I love them.

Happy Birthday Tom.
