The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 503/S 1915) is scheduled to be put to a vote in the House of Representatives on September 7th. Please call your representative today and urge them to support this bill, and protect America's horses.

This legislation will ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption and the domestic and international transport of live horses or horse flesh for human consumption.

If passed, the legislation will move to the Senate for consideration.

Which horses are at risk?

Almost any horse runs the risk of having its life ended at a slaughterhouse: wild horses removed from our public lands; retired carriage horses and racing thoroughbreds; and even once-beloved family ponies.

While American's don't have an appetite for horsemeat, 90,000 horses were slaughtered in the US last year, and their meat was exported internationally. Thousands more were trucked long distances under horrid conditions to slaughter plants in Mexico and Canada.

A phone call is worth a thousand e-mails

"Sometimes just a handful of phone calls can make more of an impression than 100 emails," says Dena Jones, a WSPA campaigns officer. "Email is great because it's quick and easy, but we know that a phone call makes more of an impact. This vote for the horses is so important -- we're counting on our activists to take that extra step."
