Feeling Happy
Hearing Dave listening to Bob Dylan in the background, singing along

Sloan's Pond

While we were at Mammoth Cave National Park we spent some time on top of the ground walking on some of the excellent trails. One of the most enjoyable was located not far from the main visitors' center, Sloan's Crossing Pond. Because of all the sinkholes in the area, most of the ponds in cave country are man made. Both of the ponds on my great grandfather's farm were man made for the dairy cows...of course as children we were forbidden to go anywhere near the ponds, making them seem all the more attractive and dangerous.

The edge of the large pond is a raised wooden walkway. We loved seeing all the beautiful fungi--there were so many different types!  We were also fascinated by the large snapping turtle in the pond. His head and neck were much thicker than my forearm. He was an old one.   There were also a lot of red eared sliders and frogs and bluegill in the pond.

A country family was leaning on the railing, watching the snapper and talking to us about what good eating they are supposed to be. We talked about the huge snapper that David and I rescued once walking across a highway--fortunately he had his hiking boots in the back of the car and a laundry basket to kind of push him into so we could release him safely.

The girls are always amused at how fast my accent comes back when we go south.

I was disgusted when the elderly woman flipped her cigarette into the pond when she was done smoking it, but too respectful of her age to say anything about it.

It would have been hard to bite my tongue about the cigarette, but you did the right thing.  I thought of you right before I left for Oregon.  There was a turtle crossing the road but it was in such a bad spot I was afraid to stop.  I felt bad but he was across when I returned.
