Ice Age Unit study

I am always amazed at how many things are interlinked and how easily it is to make broad connections to areas of knowledge. Our culture artificially divides knowledge into Math, Science, Reading, Spelling....but all things are really part of a Greater Whole. I think of the Greater Whole as being part of God.
On the way home from Florida, Shelby became enamoured of the cartoon "Ice Age." We listened (they watched) this cartoon almost continuously for the seventeen hours we were in the car. It sure beats listening to bickering and crying. I don't know how we managed to travel before portable DVDs.

This week we took a field trip to Big Bone Lick State Park. There are life sized wooly mammoth and mastadons models in a bog, as well as other Ice Age animals. We spent a very happy day there as a family. (I kept putting off writing about it because I have about twenty excellent pictures on the digital camera that I need to put on this journal.) Besides learning about the salt licks, the bogs, and the Ice Age humans and mammals, we spent a very happy hour with a herd of bison.
One female bison separated from the herd and walked directly over to us. We patted her and admired her for many a long minute. Tabitha decided her name was Indigo Moon.

Today we went over to the Natural History Museum to (What I thought was going to be briefly) pick up our tickets for the homeschooling lab and Omnimax movie tomorrow. The Omnimax documentary is Amazing Caves. We're home! talks about that movie trip.
The Natural History Museum has a wonderful Ice Age exhibit, and a huge life sized skeleton of a mastadon. We spent over an hour looking at pictures of the glacier, playing with the interactive exhibits, and walking through the glacier. We'll be utilizing this a great deal as we explore the Ice Age.
This is going to be fun!

I have always wanted to visit the Serpent mound! Groing up in Northern Ohio, we always heard about it, but I've never had a chance!
