Feeling Happy

Aquatic Ecology:  Just About Fish

Sometimes we are doing a unit study before I stop and realize that there is a theme going on to the subjects we are studying!  Last spring we bought the small piece of river property along the Licking River. We immediately started learning about the unique ecology of this river...and then we added in marine and bay ecology when we went to Sarasasota.  We visit the Newport Aquarium at least once a week, and two weeks ago we went to the excellent  Macro Invertebrate class . The next week we learned about aquarium animals and aquarium maintainance at the  Just About Fish Tour and Craft .  We keep and maintain our own goldfish pond in our backyard, and learn the names of the various different breeds of goldfish we have.  Goldfish Pond tragedy. Shelby is particularly fascinated by sharks  The Shark Photo .   A passion for sharks :Tabitha has loved them all her life We learned about rehabbing beached dolphins and injured loggerheads when we were in Florida---even watched as a commercial fishing boat brought in an injured turtle that took twelve people to bring off the boat and up to the pick up truck from the Aquarium Rehabbing beached dolphins & the lack of a Florida accent. We went for a long tour of sea bird rookeries, say oysters and seahorses and sea stars and dolphins on a boat ride through the sea grass bay of Sarasota  The Aquarium Boat Ride . We spent a happy day at the  Mote Aquarium .   Illegal turtles   we have been very concerned about the capture of baby turtles as pets..   History of the Ohio River class  was a two day class at the Cincinnati Natural History Museum, the Children's Museum, and the Cincinnati Historical society. We are involved in activism:Save our waters from Sewage.  The girls went to a wonderful five hour class by the Ohio River Foundation.
