Another reason to homeschool: Stripping promoted at career day
The San Francisco Chronicle reports on a middle-school Career Day where a guest speaker started extolling the economic benefits of dancing naked in front of strangers to young middle schooled teen girls.
Ryan Kim reports that between the fighter pilot, heart surgeon, and concert pianist, salesman William Fried was allowed to extemporaneously broaden 13-year-old horizons with financial details about bust sizes:
The hubbub began Tuesday at Jane Lathrop Stanford Middle School's third annual career day when a student asked Foster City salesman William Fried to explain why he listed "exotic dancer" and "stripper" on a handout of potential careers. Fried, who spoke to about 45 eighth-grade students during two separate 55-minute sessions, spent about a minute explaining that the profession is viable and potentially lucrative for those blessed with the physique and talent for the job.According to Fried and students who attended the talk, Fried told one group of about 16 students that strippers can earn as much as $250,000 a year and that a larger bust -- whether natural or augmented -- has a direct relationship to a dancer's salary.
He told the students, "For every two inches up there, it's another $50,000," according to Jason Garcia, 14.
Parents demanded an explanation from the school, who blamed the episode on a substitute teacher not cutting off Fried when he went off on his tangent.
Left unanswered is why a 64-year-old man---who never had children-- thought that such a topic fit within the confines of a middle-school discussion. I am the mother of a middle school aged child, and I would seriously wonder what this man was thinking.
He had listed the topic on his handouts, so the subject didn't come from the students in the class.
While I think that nudity per se is nothing to be ashamed of, promoting exotic dancing to twelve year old girls as a future career seems highly inappropriate to me.
I think this will be a new regular feature of my journal:

We have homeschooled for years and years. Our last (5 kids) finished HS this week. Like all homeschoolers we have had our moments when we wonder if we are doing the right thing. But then its stories like this that make us realize how totally right we are.

Oh boy! I would have been furious. Let's just teach a lesson on how women are property, as well. This man sounds like a recruit and for what? How much of what he said will really set in these girl's minds? I think it's awful

I think he went a bit too far.

I have nothing against stripping as a career...but that is a decision best made by someone 21 and older. NOT middle school! That was wildly inappropriate.
