Feeling Ecstatic
happy dance, happy dance :Horse slaughter for human consumption stopped!
...from the looks of this picture, it is a mare and a foal that have been stunned, hung up while still alive, and their throats cut...that definitely is a foal's little tail
As many of you remember, my children and I were VERY involved with the legislation to stop the federal funding of meat inspectors and veterinarians at three slaughter houses that kill American horses and ship them overseas. We objected strongly to paying for a foreign country to kill our horses! It passed the House during the summer, and now it has passed the Senate!!
This was a very positive experience for my homeschooling. I think that recent events have made my children cynical about our government. To see that democracy CAN work, that the voices of individuals CAN make a difference, was very empowering to them...and restored some faith in the process for me.
The Most Excellent Veterinarian said that now the companies will just use slaughter ships. The horses will be herded alive onto the ships and killed on their way to Europe. But at least it will make it more expensive and less convenient for the killers. Apparently there is a law in place to stop this practice, but we may now have to turn our attention there.
I got an email from Geoff Davis, our representative:
Dear Ms. Ridiman:
Thank you for contacting my office regarding your support for Rep. John
Sweeney's amendment to the House Agriculture Appropriations bill for FY
2006.
As you may already know, on June 8th, 2005, the U.S. House of
Representatives voted overwhelmingly in favor Rep. Sweeney's amendment
aimed at stopping horse slaughter in the United States. I was proud to
join with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle in voting in favor of
this amendment. Yesterday's 269-158 landslide vote bars federal funds
from being used to facilitate all horse slaughter. A previous amendment
only prevented wild horses from going to slaughter.
Again, I thank you for your thoughts and ideas regarding this critical
issue. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can ever be of
assistance.
Sincerely,
Geoff Davis
Member of Congress
